Physiotherapy in Türkiye: Medical Reports, SGK Sessions and Treatment Gaps
A physiotherapy plan is a clinical decision. Funding has separate conditions involving reports, diagnosis, body region and timing. A provider's SGK contract does not establish your approved sessions or final cost.
Start with specialist assessment
Request a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist's assessment and a clear diagnosis, body region, goal, session plan, location and review arrangements. Disclose treatment already received during the preceding 12 months. This guide covers administration and funding, not exercises or treatment for an individual condition.
Check the report type
SGK distinguishes a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist's report for up to 30 sessions from a board report for sessions 31–60. That board must include at least one physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist; for outpatient treatment it must be an official medical board or the board of a tertiary-level private healthcare provider. Above 60 sessions, a report from a tertiary-level healthcare institution involving at least one such specialist is required, with special provisions for designated diagnoses. These report categories do not entitle every patient to 60 or more sessions. Confirm the accepted report for your diagnosis before buying a package.
Check session counts and deadlines
| Issue | General SGK guidance | Confirm for your case |
|---|---|---|
| Starting treatment | Within 15 days of the report | Report date and available appointment |
| Outpatient sessions | One funded session per day | Treatment type and attendance records |
| Body region during the preceding 12 months | 30 sessions for the same region; 60 for two different regions | Previous sessions and exceptions; not a calendar-year allowance |
| Gap exceeding 5 working days | A new report may be required for funding | Diagnosis exceptions and restart arrangements |
For the same body region, at most two medical reports may be issued within a year. The right and left sides of the limbs count as different regions. The general region check does not apply to G80 and diagnoses marked with an asterisk in the applicable list. Ask the centre how your diagnosis is recorded before counting sessions.
For example, changing treatment centres does not start a fresh allowance. Give the new centre previous session dates, treated regions and reports, and request confirmation of the remaining sessions and report deadline before booking a package.
Establish the complete cost
Request written confirmation of SGK funding, patient charges, included sessions and extras. For private insurance, obtain authorisation, session limits and cost-sharing terms before starting. Do not assume every technique, accessory or home visit is covered simply because the plan is called physiotherapy.
Arrange six steps
Plan review and continuing care
Keep attendance, service and invoice records, and ask when progress will be reviewed and what happens after the sessions. Discuss symptom changes with the clinician; do not add exercises or sessions independently. The electronic reports guide explains general records; the treating provider must confirm whether your report meets treatment requirements.
Frequently asked questions
Does every patient get 60 sessions?
No. Diagnosis, body region, prior sessions and report requirements matter.
Can treatment start whenever I choose?
Check the deadline. SGK's guidance states 15 days from the report.
What if treatment is interrupted?
Check gaps exceeding 5 working days, report renewal and diagnosis exceptions before restarting.
Is any general report sufficient?
Confirm the required report type, issuing provider and session count.
Are home visits covered?
Check them separately with the provider and insurer.
