Follow-up Care After Treatment in Türkiye: Costs, Wounds, Complications and Remote Appointments

1️⃣ 📌 Do costs end at discharge?

Not always. You may still need appointments, tests, medicines, wound care, physiotherapy or remote consultations. These may be:
✅ Included in the surgical package.
✅ Included only for a defined period.
✅ Covered by insurance.
✅ Charged separately.

Ask what “follow-up included” means: number of visits, time limit and included services.

2️⃣ 💳 Possible costs after discharge

🔹 Postoperative consultations.
🔹 Laboratory tests.
🔹 Imaging.
🔹 Pathology and specialist investigations.
🔹 Dressings and wound care.
🔹 Stitch or staple removal.
🔹 Medicines and supplies.
🔹 Physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
🔹 Dietetic advice.
🔹 Video consultations.
🔹 Medical interpreting.
🔹 Readmission.
🔹 Complications treatment or revision surgery.
🔹 Accommodation and transport for an extended stay.

3️⃣ ⏳ The tariff's ten-day rules

The public-healthcare tariff distinguishes two situations.

After a package-priced procedure
Where the relevant tariff package rules apply, consultations:
✅ At the same facility.
✅ In the same specialty.
✅ Within ten days of the tariff-defined discharge date.
are included, together with the laboratory tests and imaging the clinician considers necessary as a result of that consultation. They must not be separately billed under that rule.

Importantly, the tariff treats the end of the specified package period as the discharge date for this calculation. It should not automatically be equated with the day you physically leave the hospital. Ask the billing department to confirm your procedure's dates and applicable category in writing.

After an ordinary outpatient consultation
A repeat visit to the same facility and specialty within ten days, including the initial consultation date, does not attract another consultation fee under the applicable outpatient tariff rule. Procedures, investigations, medicines and supplies can still be charged. This differs from package follow-up.

4️⃣ ⚠️ When should you not assume the rule applies?

Do not assume free follow-up:
❌ After the relevant period.
❌ At another hospital.
❌ At another branch without written confirmation.
❌ In another specialty.
❌ Outside the original procedure's scope.
❌ For a new illness.
❌ Under a charging arrangement to which that package rule does not apply.

The 2026 tariff provides the relevant health-tourism pricing framework and base or minimum prices; the final amount also depends on permitted pricing rules, the contract and insurance. Ask whether the procedure is registered as a tariff package and what follow-up the written contract provides. Some providers offer longer follow-up.

5️⃣ 📝 Questions before payment

Code:
Kontrol muayeneleri fiyata dahil mi ve kaç gün süreyle?
Tetkikler, pansuman ve dikişlerin alınması dahil mi?
Online kontroller ücretli mi?
🔹 Are follow-up consultations included, and for how long?
🔹 Are investigations, dressings and stitch removal included?
🔹 Are online follow-ups charged?

The quotation should specify:
✅ Number of visits.
✅ Period for using them.
✅ Responsible doctors.
✅ Included investigations.
✅ Extra-visit prices.
✅ Interpreting charges.
✅ Follow-up after returning home.

6️⃣ 🩹 Dressings, stitches and wound care

Do not assume every dressing or stitch-removal visit is free. Ask about:
🔹 Number of dressing changes.
🔹 Where they take place.
🔹 Supply costs.
🔹 Stitch or staple removal date.
🔹 Whether a clinician at home can remove them.
🔹 Instructions for bleeding, redness or discharge.

If leaving before stitch removal, obtain written details of the stitches and the appropriate timing and method of removal.

7️⃣ 🔬 Pathology and delayed results

Pathology results may arrive after discharge or after you leave Türkiye. Relevant laboratory, pathology and imaging services form part of tariff packages subject to their listed exceptions.

Before travelling, ask:
✅ When will results be ready?
✅ How will they be sent?
✅ Can you obtain an original copy?
✅ Is translation included?
✅ Will a clinician explain them?
✅ Is that consultation chargeable?
✅ What happens if further treatment is needed?

Treatment for a different diagnosis is not automatically included in the previous operation.

8️⃣ 💻 Remote medical follow-up

Some follow-up can be conducted after you return home, where clinically appropriate:
🔹 Video review of a wound.
🔹 Discussion of test results.
🔹 Symptom assessment.
🔹 Adjustment of treatment instructions.
🔹 Recovery and rehabilitation review.

Formal remote healthcare in Türkiye must be provided by an appropriately authorised facility using the Ministry's approved or registered remote-health system. A WhatsApp conversation with a coordinator can help communication but does not itself establish a formal medical consultation.

Check:
✅ Named clinician.
✅ Number and duration of appointments.
✅ Platform.
✅ Interpreter availability.
✅ Whether a report can be issued.
✅ Price.
✅ Payment from abroad.

9️⃣ 👤 Get your case contact's details

The health-tourism regulation provides for a responsible staff member for each international patient, recorded in the HealthTürkiye portal.

Before discharge, obtain:
🔹 Name.
🔹 Direct contact number.
🔹 Email.
🔹 Working hours.
🔹 Out-of-hours alternative.
🔹 Who responds to medical problems.

Do not depend entirely on one intermediary's telephone number.

1️⃣0️⃣ ⚠️ Complications are different from routine follow-up

Routine follow-up monitors expected recovery. A complication is a health problem related to the procedure that may require further treatment, readmission or another operation.

The regulation published in April 2025 introduced facility-arranged complications insurance for surgical and interventional procedures in an operating theatre within international health tourism, with an original compliance deadline of 31 December 2025. That historical deadline does not prove current enforceability or that an individual procedure has an active policy. Obtain current confirmation and the actual insurance documents.

The regulation also addresses provider and intermediary responsibility for the services they provide, including complications and malpractice. Whether liability or insurance payment arises in a particular case requires assessment; neither is automatic simply because recovery is difficult.

Policy definitions, the relationship to the procedure, limits and exclusions determine cover.

1️⃣1️⃣ 📄 Questions about complications insurance

Request:
✅ Insurer.
✅ Policy number.
✅ Insurance certificate.
✅ Start and end dates.
✅ Covered procedures.
✅ Postoperative coverage period.
✅ Benefit limits.
✅ Deductible or patient contribution.
✅ Exclusions.
✅ Repeat-operation cover.
✅ Admission and intensive-care cover.
✅ Treatment after returning home.
✅ Notification deadline.
✅ Claims and emergency contacts.

1️⃣2️⃣ 🚨 Serious symptoms

Do not wait for the coordinator or insurer if there is an emergency. In Türkiye call 112 or seek the nearest emergency department for serious symptoms such as:
❌ Breathlessness.
❌ Severe chest pain.
❌ Bleeding that does not stop.
❌ Unconsciousness or confusion.
❌ Rapid sudden swelling.
❌ High or persistent fever.
❌ Unusually worsening pain.
❌ Marked redness or discharge at the operation site.

Once stable, contact the hospital and insurer and retain reports and invoices.

1️⃣3️⃣ 🌍 Continuing care at home

Before travelling, obtain:
1️⃣ Epikriz — discharge summary.
2️⃣ Operation report.
3️⃣ Final diagnosis.
4️⃣ Laboratory results.
5️⃣ Pathology report or collection arrangements.
6️⃣ Imaging in a usable format.
7️⃣ Generic medicine names and doses.
8️⃣ Implant card and serial number, where applicable.
9️⃣ Wound, activity and dietary instructions.
🔟 Future appointments and tests.

Request a report in English or another language your clinician can use. Check secure sharing through e-Nabız or another suitable route.

1️⃣4️⃣ 💰 Who pays for follow-up?

Hospital: if included in the package or written contract.
Health or travel insurer: if the service is covered and any required authorisation obtained.
Complications insurer: if the case meets the policy's definition and terms.
Patient: where the period has expired, the service is excluded or required approval is absent, subject to applicable rights and billing rules.

Obtain written approval before costly non-urgent investigations or treatment.

1️⃣5️⃣ 🚩 Financial warning signs

❌ Verbal promises of “lifetime” follow-up.
❌ No written follow-up period.
❌ Refusal to provide an asserted complications policy.
❌ Coordinator messages replacing clinical follow-up.
❌ New charges without itemisation.
❌ Payment to a personal account.
❌ Withheld operation or discharge reports.
❌ Changing the responsible doctor after payment.
❌ Promising every complication is free without policy terms.
❌ Late insurance notification.

1️⃣6️⃣ 📋 Before leaving the hospital

✅ Final invoice and itemisation.
✅ Discharge and operation reports.
✅ Written aftercare instructions.
✅ Follow-up appointments.
✅ Clear included and chargeable services.
✅ Results or expected issue dates.
✅ Medicines and generic names.
✅ Responsible staff contact.
✅ Emergency number.
✅ Applicable complications policy.
✅ Follow-up plan after returning home.
✅ Complaint and claim routes.

1️⃣7️⃣ ✅ Key points

The applicable tariff package can include consultations and necessary follow-up investigations for ten days under its specific date and scope rules. Later care or another facility or specialty may involve separate charges. Leave with written follow-up arrangements, reports, contacts and actual insurance details.
