School Absence in Türkiye 2026: Submitting an Excuse and Checking the Record

A child may miss school because of illness or family circumstances. Notifying the school, submitting an excuse and checking its entry are separate steps. Rules differ between primary, middle and secondary education, with special arrangements for some cases.

⁦1️⃣⁩ Notify the school promptly

Contact the school early with the student’s name, class, date and a brief reason. Ask the administration which document and submission channel apply. Calling a teacher or sending a message does not itself prove that the excuse was accepted or the record corrected.

For travel or an expected appointment, ask in advance about permission and the school’s process. Travel or a purchased ticket does not automatically grant leave.

Distinguish a prompt notice that the student will be absent, the parent’s statement or report needed to document the excuse, and a request for advance permission when the date is known. The school can specify the form and recipient; one message does not necessarily complete every step.

⁦2️⃣⁩ Check the deadline for the school stage

StageExcuse document or parent statementPractical limit
Primary and middle schoolAsk the school promptly which current deadline applies to the stageSubmit to the administration for e-Okul entry
Secondary schoolWithin 5 working days after the excuse dayCheck rules specific to the student’s programme
Unavoidable delayAdministration may extend to a limit of 20 working daysExtension requires a school decision; it is not automatic

Working-day deadlines depend on the applicable rules. Ask the administration promptly if absence continues or a document is delayed. Available official school guidance differs on the primary and middle-school period, so confirm the current deadline rather than relying on an unresolved figure. Preschool and vocational-centre rules need separate checks.

⁦3️⃣⁩ Check the entry and consequences

Review attendance in e-Okul and ask the administration to check any date or classification you believe is wrong. Keep a copy of the statement or report and any submission receipt; ask when the update will appear.

For secondary school, the general rule is failure if unexcused absence exceeds 10 days or total absence exceeds 30 days, with exceptions for specified circumstances. Do not assume an exception applies automatically to every illness or condition. Ask the school about the programme and required evidence.

If attendance differs from your document, ask the administration to review the date, class, displayed entry and correction sought, and attach suitable proof of submission. For example: “The day still appears unexcused although I submitted the statement; please check the record and advise me of the result.” Keep the original and check the update rather than assuming a request implements it.

⁦4️⃣⁩ Missed exams and support needs

Ask the school about accepted excuses, the replacement examination process, schedule and documentation. Submitting an absence excuse does not alone guarantee a make-up exam; acceptance and the relevant procedure matter.

For prolonged illness or educational support needs, discuss a return and support plan with the school and share documents privately with the responsible office.

If absence coincides with an exam, identify the date and subject when asking about the excuse procedure, deadline, documentation and replacement-exam schedule. For a long illness or special educational need, discuss an individual study and assessment plan with the school rather than applying another family’s outcome to the student.

⁦5️⃣⁩ Practical steps for families

⁦1️⃣⁩ Notify the school of the date, stage and a brief reason.

⁦2️⃣⁩ Ask which document, deadline and channel apply, including advance leave if appropriate.

⁦3️⃣⁩ Submit the statement or report and retain any receipt.

⁦4️⃣⁩ Check the e-Okul entry and ask the administration to correct discrepancies.

⁦5️⃣⁩ For a missed exam, request the accepted-excuse process and replacement date.

⁦6️⃣⁩ Keep the school’s response and check any update; if the disagreement continues, ask the school or education directorate about the next review route.

⁦6️⃣⁩ Frequently asked questions

Is a phone call to the teacher enough?
Early notification helps, but does not automatically replace submission to the administration and entry in the record.

Is illness automatically excused?
Do not assume acceptance. Provide the requested statement or report and follow up.

Is the deadline the same for all stages?
The rule may vary by stage and individual circumstances. The secondary-school text states five working days; confirm the current primary and middle-school deadline with the administration.

Can a parent change the record directly?
Ask the school administration to investigate and correct an error.

Does an excuse guarantee a replacement exam?
No. Confirm acceptance, the procedure and the replacement date with the school.

Is travel automatically authorised leave?
No. Ask for advance permission under the school procedure; booking travel is not approval.

Does school receipt of a report update attendance automatically?
Not necessarily. Check how the day appears and request review of any discrepancy.
