🏫 Choosing a private or international school: licence, curriculum, qualification and cost
A school’s name and advertising do not establish its legal category, the child’s eligibility or acceptance of its qualification at the next destination.

A tour of an attractive school can be reassuring, but enrolment needs information that is not all visible during the visit. The advertised name may differ from the licensed branch. “International” may describe an emphasis on languages, a particular programme or a separate legal category. Published fees may cover only part of the service, leaving major expenses outside the calculation. Begin by defining precisely what the family would be committing to.

Organise the decision around four questions: Can the school register the child officially? What will the child actually study? Which documents will they receive, and how can these be used later? Can the family manage the timetable and cost throughout the planned period? This makes different schools comparable without treating publicity or price as the only evidence. It does not replace checks with the school and responsible authority, especially where citizenship, programme or previous education differs.

Organising documents and an online application

1️⃣ 🪪 Clarify the legal category before interpreting the name

Private education includes schools teaching a Turkish programme, foreign schools, private international institutions and minority schools. These categories are not interchangeable because their languages or trading names look similar. A private international institution in the legal sense serves foreign students, with specific provisions concerning acquisition of Turkish citizenship during study. Explain the child’s citizenship and current status to the registration office and request a written explanation of any particular eligibility issue.

An Arabic- or English-language programme does not, by itself, establish an international licence. Ask for the full legal name, institution number, educational stage and branch the child will attend. If a sales representative describes a school group, bring the enquiry back to the actual building and grade: another branch’s licence does not automatically describe this offer. If the category is unclear, consult the education directorate or responsible private-education unit before paying money that may be difficult to recover.

2️⃣ 📄 What establishes the school’s licence?

Request information linking the licence to the school, stage and location, then check that it matches the contract and payment receipt. A parent need not become an expert in every regulation, but should know who actually provides the service. If the institution changed its name, ask how the old and new names relate and how new documents are issued. Do not rely on a partner’s logo or a displayed certificate without understanding its scope.

Separate programme accreditation from the school’s licence. A school may be licensed for school education while an additional programme has another awarding body or different conditions. Ask about the programme’s status for your child’s grade, and whether it is actually offered at that branch. Participation in a network, competition or teacher-training course is not, on its own, authority to issue an international programme qualification. A useful check produces a specific question and an answer you can refer back to.

3️⃣ 📚 Read the child’s actual week

Ask for a weekly timetable, suitable subject descriptions and assessment information without accessing other students’ personal records. How much time goes to languages, mathematics, science, arts and physical activity? Which language is used to teach, read and assess each subject? Are additional subjects or requirements scheduled outside normal hours? This reveals the real week and the home support needed. “A strong curriculum” does not answer these questions.

Also examine continuity. Does the programme run from the current grade through the end of the stage, or do options change at a particular grade? What happens if too few students choose an advertised pathway? How does the school handle a different educational background or arrival midway through a stage? A programme can be academically sound yet unsuitable for the family’s plans if the next destination needs different subjects or languages. Ask before starting a path the child may be unable to complete.

4️⃣ 🎓 Qualifications and transitions: recognition for what purpose?

Establish who issues the end-of-stage certificate and transcript, and what documents are provided when transferring before graduation. Then identify the likely destination: another Turkish school, another country’s system or a university. The questions differ by purpose; “recognised worldwide” is not enough. Request the authority and use being claimed, then ask the receiving institution about its current conditions. One graduate’s experience cannot guarantee the outcome for every student or year.

School equivalency may be required when leaving a different curriculum. It is separate from school licensing and university admission. University planning must take account of citizenship, place of study, enrolment year and the appropriate admission route. Do not accept a promise that foreign citizenship always ensures a particular route after completing secondary education in Türkiye. Keeping the certificate, transcript and official programme description helps, but does not remove the receiving authority’s requirements.

5️⃣ 📊 Compare answers that can be verified

Comparison areaInformation neededAn answer requiring further checks
Registration and licensingCategory, branch, grade and child’s eligibilityA licence belonging to another branch
Programme and languageSubjects, teaching and assessment languagesA language promise without a clear timetable
QualificationAwarding body and transfer/graduation documents“Recognition” without an authority or purpose
CostComplete quotation; compulsory and optional itemsA base price with uncosted extras
SupportWelcome plan, monitoring and responsible contactA promise that the child will simply adapt

Do not penalise a school for saying it needs to check a question: another authority may genuinely be involved. Compare responsiveness and the clarity of the eventual answer, distinguishing confirmation from expectation. Use the same questions on one sheet for each school, so one does not look better merely because its tour supplied more information. Weight the comparison around the child’s needs; a service they never use matters less than daily support they require.

6️⃣ 💰 Calculate what the family will actually pay

Obtain a written quotation for the academic period covering tuition, meals, transport, books, uniform, activities and other services, with compulsory and optional items identified. Ask about taxes and amounts excluded from the advertised total, and the pricing and payment currencies if different. “Services” does not automatically mean everything is included. Cost the items your child needs so the totals compared represent equivalent provision.

Rules govern private-school fee publication and certain increases, and these rules have been amended. Do not budget future years using a circulating percentage or a verbal promise of a fixed price. Ask for the published fee for the current grade and cycle, the rule for continuing students, and the contract. For an early-payment discount or scholarship, establish duration, renewal conditions and the items actually covered rather than assuming meals and transport are included.

7️⃣ 📝 Contracts, withdrawal and refunds

Identify the contracting party, service, period and grade, payment dates, and the consequences of late payment, withdrawal or transfer. Clarify reservation versus final registration, and tuition versus other charges. If equivalency or registration documents remain pending, ask how the contract deals with an unmet condition. Do not rely on the family’s private interpretation of an unclear clause: obtain written clarification or amendment before signing.

When discussing refunds, specify the event: withdrawal before school starts, transfer after it starts, cancellation of a programme, or inability to register the child. Outcomes can differ by reason, timing and charge. Do not assume one refund percentage for every school and service. Keep the quotation, contract, receipts and correspondence, and pay through a documented channel belonging to the contracting party. If a dispute arises, begin with a specific request to the school, then ask the responsible authority about the appropriate formal route.

8️⃣ 🤝 Support and environment beyond the slogans

Ask how teachers welcome a child who does not understand all instructions and communicate observations or problems to parents. Request a general example of a support plan without identifying another student. Is language support available? How are persistent reading or organisational difficulties addressed? Are classrooms, toilets and activities accessible to your child? The answer should identify a responsible person and follow-up step, not merely state that everyone is cared for.

Observe how staff communicate with children and respect privacy, and ask about bullying, collection, food allergies and absence. One visit is not a final judgement, but can generate useful questions. Ask about teacher changes and notification of major programme changes. Listen to the child in age-appropriate terms: what did they understand, where did they feel comfortable, and what worried them? Their participation informs the choice, while licensing and contractual checks remain adults’ responsibility.

9️⃣ 🚌 The journey, timetable and sustainable budget

Test the travel time near the start of the school day. Request the transport route, collection arrangements and emergency alternatives. Compare these with sleep, meals, study support and play. A distant school may provide an important service, but a long commute can exhaust the child and family. Extra activities may need separate transport or changes to parents’ work. Include these effects rather than comparing only fees and subjects.

Build a household budget covering the quoted price, required extras and costs outside the school, then assess whether it remains manageable if work or housing circumstances change. You need not guess next year’s price; identify the flexibility available. Ask what happens if the family moves to another city and what leaving documents the school provides. An alternative plan reduces the risk of an educational interruption caused by obligations whose details were not read.

1️⃣0️⃣ 🧩 Hypothetical example: prices that are not directly comparable

Suppose a family compares a school teaching the Turkish programme with additional language lessons against an institution offering another curriculum. The first appears more expensive because meals, books and some activities are included; the second quotes tuition alone. The parents request written breakdowns and identify services their child will actually need. They then discover that “international” in one offer is a marketing description, so ask for the legal category and qualification rather than interpreting the name themselves.

They review registration and previous studies with the responsible authority, and ask about the language of mathematics assessment and initial support. They do not use invented figures to prove that one school is cheaper. They rebuild the comparison using equivalent services and record unresolved points. The example illustrates why comparing two names or prices is insufficient: understand the provision, restrictions and next transition, then choose an offer the family can support and sustain.

1️⃣1️⃣ ✅ Before paying a reservation fee

  • Confirm the legal category, branch, grade and contractual name.
  • Check the child’s registration eligibility independently of the trading name.
  • Request subject and language distribution, assessment and programme continuity.
  • Identify the awarding body, transfer documents and next educational destination.
  • Compare the total required services, separating compulsory from optional costs.
  • Read discount or scholarship terms, renewal and covered items.
  • Understand reservations, payments, withdrawal and refunds for events relevant to your family.
  • Review support, communication, travel, timetable and the ability to continue.

1️⃣3️⃣ ❓ Frequently asked questions

Is a school teaching in a foreign language legally international?
Not necessarily. Teaching language does not determine the licensed category. Ask for the name, category and approved programme for the intended grade, then check the child’s eligibility for that category.

Does an international programme mean automatic university admission?
No. The programme and qualification are parts of an application; the receiving institution applies its own conditions. Check the route, tests, language and documents for the student’s status and cycle. A programme logo is not a guarantee.

Does a school scholarship make all education free?
Establish its coverage, duration and renewal conditions. An offer may concern one charge while other services have separate contracts or prices. Start with the written terms, not the discount percentage alone.

What if the sales answer differs from the contract?
Ask for the discrepancy to be resolved in writing before paying or signing. If an essential condition remains unclear, do not mark it confirmed. Clear provision with fewer services may be acceptable; uncertainty about registration, qualifications or money can change the entire decision.

How can other families’ opinions help?
Use them to generate questions about communication, schedules and services, then check the particular branch, grade and current year yourself. Experiences depend on children’s needs and family circumstances. They do not replace licensing, the contract or conditions at the next educational destination.
