Türkiye Interest Rate Decision on 22 October 2026: Loans and Deposits

The central bank reduced its policy rate by one percentage point. Here is what the decision means and how to compare bank offers without assuming an automatic change to your contract.

⁦1️⃣⁩ What did the central bank decide?

On 22 October 2026, the Monetary Policy Committee reduced the one-week repo auction rate from 37% to 36%. That is a fall of one percentage point, or 100 basis points; it is not a 1% decline relative to the previous rate.

The Committee also lowered the overnight lending rate from 40% to 39% and the overnight borrowing rate from 35.5% to 34.5%. These are central-bank transaction rates, not automatic rates for individuals’ accounts.

⁦2️⃣⁩ Why did the Committee decide this?

The Committee said recent inflation data and leading indicators confirmed a declining underlying trend despite monthly fluctuations, while domestic demand remained weak. It also identified elevated energy prices linked to geopolitical tensions as an upside risk to inflation.

This is the Committee’s assessment at the decision date, not a promise that prices will fall or that inflation has ended. A lower inflation rate can still mean prices are rising more slowly.

⁦3️⃣⁩ Will loan rates fall immediately?

The decision does not require every bank to reduce every loan rate by the same amount on the same day. New finance offers differ by term, funding costs, borrower risk, fees and conditions.

For an existing loan, check your contract: a fixed rate may stay unchanged, while a variable rate depends on its index and repricing terms. Do not assume an automatic change or that refinancing saves money after fees.

⁦4️⃣⁩ What about deposits and exchange rates?

New deposit offers at renewal may change with the bank, term and market; the policy rate is not a guaranteed deposit return. Compare the annual rate, account type, term, taxes and early withdrawal conditions.

Exchange rates respond to several factors. The decision alone does not guarantee a direction for the lira or gold, and should not be treated as a guaranteed investment return.

⁦5️⃣⁩ A practical comparison

Suppose a new loan is offered at 42% annually before the decision and another at 41.5% afterwards. The difference between the offers is half a percentage point; these are illustrative figures, not actual quotes. Do not apply the policy-rate change directly to a loan: request written repayment schedules and total costs.

Compare application fees, any required insurance, the number of instalments and the amount of each. The total cost can differ even when the advertised rate is lower.

⁦6️⃣⁩ What should you track next?

Record the decision date and check subsequent central-bank announcements when issued; 36% belongs to the 22 October 2026 decision and can change. Check inflation data and actual loan and deposit offers for their respective dates rather than combining different periods.

A bank’s quote may change during an offer or at renewal under its terms. Ask about the applicable date, duration and whether the rate is fixed or variable.

⁦7️⃣⁩ Steps before a financial decision

Identify whether you are comparing an existing loan, a new offer or a deposit at renewal. Ask for rates and charges in writing, and compare products with similar terms, amounts and rate types.

Leave room in your budget and do not depend on a future rate cut to meet obligations. Ask the bank to explain any contractual condition you do not understand before accepting.

⁦8️⃣⁩ Common questions

Does 36% mean a deposit pays 36%?
No. The policy rate applies to central-bank operations; each deposit has its own offer and conditions.

Will my fixed-loan instalment fall automatically?
Do not assume so. Read the contract or request a written schedule from your bank.

Does a rate cut mean prices will fall?
No. Interest rates, inflation and the price level are different measures, and the decision guarantees no particular outcome.

When should I use this rate?
Use it for the 22 October 2026 decision specifically; check the latest statement for subsequent decisions.
