Joint Bank Accounts in Türkiye: Withdrawal Authority, Signatures and Closure
Two names on an account do not by themselves tell you who can withdraw money or close it. The crucial choice is the operating mandate recorded by the bank: may either holder act alone, or must everyone sign?
Check the agreement before depositing family savings or shared expenses. Agreeing what the money is for matters, but it does not replace instructions that the bank accepts and applies.
Separate ownership from operating authority
Ask the bank who the registered account holders are, their shares and who may perform each operation. Moving from an individual account to one with two names is not necessarily a matter of adding an app user. An account holder, an authorised representative and an additional cardholder are different roles; possessing a card does not establish co-ownership of the balance.
İş Bankası’s current contracts page lists two joint-account forms, Teselsüllü and Teselsülsüz. These examples illustrate signature authority; they do not establish that every bank offers the same options or accepts every foreign applicant. Obtain the bank’s requirements for each applicant, including accepted identity and residence documents.
Choose signatures that match the risks
The İş Bankası form allowing independent operation authorises each holder to withdraw, give instructions and close the account alone. Bank authority can therefore allow withdrawals exceeding that person’s contribution; an informal expectation is not sufficient control. This form also specifies equal shares; do not generalise that to every account.
Its joint-operation form requires joint signatures for instructions, withdrawals and closure. This provides oversight but may delay an urgent payment if someone is unavailable. Check which channels and products actually support that mandate and whether shares can be changed before depositing money.
| Arrangement | What to establish | Practical risk |
|---|---|---|
| Independent operation | Does authority cover the full balance and closure? | The other holder may act without fresh consent |
| Joint signatures | Who signs and how does the bank authenticate them? | An absent signatory may delay payment |
| Card or app | Each channel’s separate permissions and limits | An expected control may not work across every channel |
| Ending the arrangement | Approvals, balance destination and linked products | Withdrawing the money does not establish closure |
Organise everyday use clearly
Agree the amount reserved for shared spending, how often you will fund it and which spending needs prior agreement between you. Keep evidence of each person’s contribution and transfer purpose. This helps later reconciliation without assuming it automatically changes bank authority. Ask about the appropriate product before using a personal joint account for business.
For example, one person deposits a month’s expenses and the other adds a larger sum for a later goal. Where the contract permits independent operation over the full balance, labelling a transfer “savings” does not itself prevent withdrawal through the bank. Discuss separate savings or a suitable signature mandate before funding. Review the statement and alerts available to each holder instead of sharing one password.
Plan for changes and disagreement
Ask how to change the mandate, add a holder or remove one, and whether a new account is needed. In İş Bankası’s independent-operation example, one holder’s notice alone does not prevent payment to the other; the form addresses joint instructions or a court decision to remove authority. Do not generalise that clause or promise that one telephone call will freeze any joint account.
For an actual disagreement, notify the bank of the facts, request its available procedure and retain the case reference. Obtain qualified assistance for a dispute over ownership or a necessary court order. Do not describe a transaction by an authorised holder as fraud merely because you disagree about its purpose. Bank authority and settlement between holders require separate consideration.
Complete six steps before funding
Obtain the agreement, signed mandate and details of actual channels and charges. The words “joint account” or a verbal explanation of withdrawal rights are not enough.
Treat closure and death as separate procedures
Before closure, match the required consents to the account type, resolve pending transactions, debt, instructions and linked products, then specify where the balance goes and obtain closure confirmation. Dividing the balance does not necessarily close the account or cancel cards. If residence changes or a holder cannot attend, arrange an approved route with the bank in advance.
If a holder dies, notify the bank and ask for its procedure and documents before acting. Do not assume the survivor automatically receives the entire balance or may continue withdrawing simply because the account is joint. The deceased’s share, heirs and relevant obligations must be examined. This guide does not establish a universal entitlement to the balance after death.
Common questions
Can every foreign couple open a joint account?
Eligibility is not guaranteed here. The bank assesses each applicant, product and accepted documents.
Can the other person withdraw all the money?
An independent mandate may permit it. Read the agreement and each channel’s limits before funding.
Can our private agreement require two signatures?
Ask the bank to accept and record the arrangement. A private agreement alone does not establish a change in its instructions.
Should we share verification codes?
No. Request approved access and authority for each person; do not share passwords or codes.
Does the survivor receive the entire balance?
Do not assume so. Notify the bank and check shares, estate procedures and case-specific requirements.
