An app outage or a lost card can interrupt everyday payments when you depend on one account. A second account can be a useful backup if it meets your needs and its costs and conditions are manageable.

1. When might it help?
Consider your circumstances if you depend on regular salary or family transfers, travel often, make frequent online purchases or need an alternative while a card is replaced. A backup at a different institution can sometimes offer more independence from a single bank's outage.

Opening another account remains subject to the bank's requirements, including those for foreign nationals. It is not automatically free or available to everyone.

2. A possible arrangement
Use the main account for income and everyday expenses. A second account could hold accessible emergency money, handle selected fixed bills or support controlled online spending.

Choose an arrangement you can monitor. Separating money is useful only if you understand which payments and obligations belong to each account.

3. What separation can and cannot do
It can make budgeting clearer and provide another payment route if one card or service is unavailable. Restricting funds or limits available to a particular card may reduce exposure in some circumstances.

Editorial clarification — 8 October 2026: Two accounts do not guarantee protection from fraud or interruption. They may share the same phone, passwords, bank or payment infrastructure. A lawful account restriction must be resolved through the relevant institution; a backup account is not a way to bypass compliance checks.

4. Keep it manageable
Do not open multiple accounts without a purpose. Review card charges, transfer and ATM costs, required balances and account conditions. Keep contact details current, secure each account and monitor both for unfamiliar activity.

Two accounts may be enough for one household; another may prefer one well-managed account and a different practical backup. The useful number depends on your needs.

Make the decision around a real need
A second account can improve resilience and budgeting, but its benefit should justify the extra administration and any costs. Plan how you would access emergency money if your usual phone or card were unavailable.
