Illness After Eating in Türkiye: When to Seek Care and How to Report a Concern

Stomach pain, vomiting or diarrhoea can occur after a meal, but timing alone does not prove that the last restaurant or dish caused it. Some illnesses start within hours and others days later. Obtain appropriate care before focusing on a complaint or assigning responsibility.

⁦1️⃣⁩ When do you need urgent help?

Call 112 immediately for breathing difficulty, loss of consciousness, seizures or severe deterioration, and follow the operator’s instructions. Give your address, hotel or venue name, room number and number of affected people. Do not wait for insurance approval. For suspected poisoning, 114 offers poison advice; do not delay calling 112 for immediate danger.

Seek urgent medical assessment for severe abdominal pain or cramping, bloody diarrhoea, repeated vomiting that prevents keeping fluids down, signs of dehydration such as reduced urination, dizziness or dry mouth, high fever, or persistent symptoms. Young children, pregnant people, older adults and people with weakened immunity need particular care; ask about appropriate care before symptoms worsen.

⁦2️⃣⁩ What should you do while arranging care?

If you are conscious and can drink, take safe fluids in small amounts to reduce fluid loss; a clinician or pharmacist may recommend an appropriate oral rehydration solution. Follow medical advice if you have a fluid restriction or chronic condition. Do not force an unconscious person to drink or induce vomiting. Do not start antibiotics or anti-diarrhoea medicine on your own; ask a professional, particularly if there is blood, fever or the patient is a child.

Tell the clinician when symptoms began, foods and drinks consumed over the previous days, who ate with you and whether they became ill, and any medicines, conditions or pregnancy. Keep a short record even when the cause is unknown.

⁦3️⃣⁩ Record the concern without making an early accusation

Keep the receipt or order confirmation, venue name and address, meal time and symptom onset. Photograph packaging and labels if available, and record dish names without sharing other people’s medical details. Ask the health authority whether it needs a sample and how to store it; do not eat leftovers again or delay care to collect evidence. A receipt and timing alone do not establish the source or liability.

⁦4️⃣⁩ How do you report it in Türkiye?

Once care is arranged, report a food-safety concern to Alo 174 or the local agriculture and forestry directorate. Give the venue name and address, product, date and symptoms clearly, and retain any reference number. A report requests investigation; it is neither a diagnosis nor a promise of compensation. 174 is not an ambulance service.

If you have travel insurance, contact the insurer after stabilisation, keep treatment reports and invoices, and ask about claim conditions. Do not assume every cost is covered or delay urgent care for approval.

⁦5️⃣⁩ Frequently asked questions

Was the last meal always responsible?
No. Symptoms can be delayed and have other causes; assessment is needed.

Does a restaurant registration code guarantee the meal is safe?
No. It helps verify establishment details and does not establish the safety of a particular dish.

Should I call 174 instead of a doctor?
No. A food report does not provide medical care or an ambulance.

Can I give a child medicine from a pharmacy straight away?
Ask a professional first and give the child’s age and symptoms; do not delay care for danger signs.

What if several people become ill?
Tell the clinician the number affected and inform the relevant authority, describing foods and symptom timing without assuming the cause.
