Bank Accounts After Death in Türkiye: Finding Banks and Heir Procedures

Finding the name of a deceased person’s bank is different from establishing the balance, and knowing the balance does not authorise withdrawal. Build the file in stages: death notification, proof of heirship, identification of banking relationships, tax and representation requirements, then documented release.

This concerns bank accounts. It does not automatically apply Turkish property-inheritance shares to cash or determine every family’s entitlement. Foreign nationality, a will, a minor or a dispute requires case-specific assessment of law, evidence and authority.

⁦1️⃣⁩ Notify the bank and preserve records

Notify a known bank of the death through its official channel. Ask how to record the notification, which documents it needs and how accounts and cards will be protected. Retain the reference, date and branch. Do not use the deceased’s login or card or assume that an earlier power of attorney continues. Request a procedure based on your own verified capacity and authority.

Prepare identity records for the deceased and heir, death evidence and the inheritance certificate known as Veraset İlamı or Mirasçılık Belgesi. Reconcile names, numbers and dates. Before paying for extensive translations and certification, obtain the bank’s list of acceptable foreign documents and required form. A commercial translation alone does not guarantee acceptance.

⁦2️⃣⁩ Find banks within the service’s scope

The BDDK e-Devlet service for heirs allows enquiries after the issuing authority verifies the inheritance relationship. The official service announcement describes domestic-branch deposit and participation accounts of natural persons who are Turkish citizens. It is not a guaranteed comprehensive search for every foreign deceased person or every asset.

The result identifies banks, rather than providing balances, branches or payment authority. Obtain details from the relevant institution after establishing capacity. If the case falls outside the service, or no result appears, review known banks and old documents and seek the appropriate documented enquiry route. An empty result does not establish that the estate contains no money or debt.

⁦3️⃣⁩ Separate balance information from release documents

Request an official statement suitable for the estate and tax process, identifying the relevant date, products and currencies. Ask separately about debt, restrictions and linked obligations. An app portfolio screenshot is not a substitute for the bank’s letter. Nor should the whole of a joint account automatically be treated as the deceased’s property.

Document or resultPurposeLimit
Bank-search resultIdentify institutions to approachDoes not supply complete balance details
Accepted inheritance certificateEstablish heirs, capacity and sharesDoes not alone resolve every release requirement
Bank estate statementDocument assets for review and taxIs not permission for family distribution
Tax and representation papersComplete release requirementsMust match the case and bank

⁦4️⃣⁩ Understand tax and attendance requirements

Article 17 of Law 7338 requires the relevant tax-office certificate before covered release. Without it, the provision permits the balance to be paid after withholding 5% as tax security for inheritance transfers, with duties on the withholding institution. This is not the final inheritance-tax rate or guaranteed release without a certificate. Ask the bank and tax office how the actual route and withholding settlement apply.

Yapı Kredi’s death guidance distinguishes a single heir’s request for an estate statement from ordinary payment involving all heirs or specifically authorised representatives and tax clearance. Documented partition or court decisions can require separate assessment. Do not generalise its procedure to every bank or equate an information request with withdrawal.

⁦5️⃣⁩ Organise the file in six steps

Keep a written list of outstanding items for each bank, identifying what must come from an heir, court or tax office. Record who received each document and when. No single release deadline is promised for every estate.

⁦1️⃣⁩ Notify known banks and retain references without using the deceased’s credentials.

⁦2️⃣⁩ Establish acceptable heirship, identity and death evidence and necessary certification or translation.

⁦3️⃣⁩ Use the official search where eligible, then request details from each bank.

⁦4️⃣⁩ Obtain estate, debt and restriction information and check tax-office requirements and the case’s deadline.

⁦5️⃣⁩ Arrange heir attendance or precise powers of attorney and any permissions for minors or disputes.

⁦6️⃣⁩ Check final documents, release amounts, deductions and destinations and keep each bank’s receipts.

⁦6️⃣⁩ Reconcile the outcome before closing the file

Compare receipts with the bank statement, explained deductions and relevant date. Request a written explanation for differences or retained balances. Separate a loan settlement or insurance claim from the mere existence of a deposit. Death should not be assumed to cancel every debt, nor should insurance be assumed to cover it without conditions.

Submit wills, dispute papers and court decisions through the appropriate procedure instead of undocumented family distribution. For heirs abroad, establish accepted representation, enquiry and collection authority and payment destination before travel. Check closure of remaining accounts, products and instructions. One transfer receipt does not establish that every banking relationship has ended.

⁦7️⃣⁩ Common questions

Is family relationship enough to withdraw?
No. The bank needs verified capacity, documents, representation and its applicable release requirements.

Does the BDDK search cover every foreign deceased person?
Do not assume so. The announcement covers natural-person Turkish citizens and specified domestic accounts.

Does the search show the balance?
No. It identifies banks; request details from those banks under their approved procedure.

Is 5% the final inheritance tax?
No. It is tax-security withholding under the specific Article17 route; settlement depends on the file.

Must all heirs attend every enquiry?
Information and payment are different. Request the bank’s case-specific checklist and accepted representation or exceptions.
