Turkish Street Food: Simit, Chestnuts, Sweetcorn and Kumpir
Street food is part of everyday life in Türkiye.
Sometimes it can be more delicious than a meal in a five-star restaurant.
1) Simit – Sesame Bread Rings
- Ring-shaped bread coated in sesame seeds.
- Sold from street carts and bakeries.
- Enjoy it with cheese or tea, or simply on its own.
2) Kestane – Roasted Chestnuts
- Especially common in colder weather, in autumn and winter.
- Their aroma in the streets is part of Istanbul's atmosphere.
3) Grilled or Boiled Sweetcorn
- Sold from carts, particularly along waterfronts and in parks.
- Usually an inexpensive snack to enjoy while walking.
4) Kumpir – Loaded Baked Potatoes
- A large baked potato, split open and filled with cheese, sweetcorn, olives, salads, mayonnaise and other toppings.
- Very filling: it can be a meal in itself.
5) Midye Dolma – Stuffed Mussels
- Mussels stuffed with rice and spices, eaten with a squeeze of lemon.
- Common along the waterfront and on the pavements of Istanbul and other coastal cities.
- Choose a clean, well-regarded shop rather than an arbitrary street cart.
Turkish street food suits:
- Anyone wanting a quick, light bite between sightseeing stops.
- Anyone keen to taste the city's everyday flavours beyond a polished restaurant menu.
