Choosing a Restaurant in Türkiye and Avoiding Tourist Traps

Every tourist city has excellent restaurants, alongside places that depend on a steady stream of disappointed first-time customers.
These simple checks can help you choose where to eat in Türkiye.

1. Encouraging signs ✅

  • You see Turkish customers as well as tourists. This is a useful clue to local appeal, rather than a guarantee of quality.
  • The menu is clear, with prices for everything.
  • Staff are busy serving food rather than persistently calling people in from outside.
  • Tables and toilets are acceptably clean.

2. Reasons to look more carefully ⚠️

  • A menu with missing or unclear prices.
  • Excessive pressure at the door.
  • An almost empty restaurant in a busy tourist area; consider the time of day as well.
  • Unclear portion sizes or seafood priced by the kilogram without an explanation of the rate and how the bill will be calculated.

3. Using reviews thoughtfully 🔍

  • Do not rely on one review. Compare the overall pattern of ratings across more than one site.
  • Read negative comments carefully for recurring concerns about price, cleanliness or misleading treatment, while considering the wider range of reviews rather than assuming every allegation is established fact.
  • Check the dates: a restaurant praised four years ago may have changed substantially since then.

4. Prices to clarify before ordering

  • Fish sold by the kilogram.
  • Daily specials that do not appear on the menu.
  • Meze brought to the table without your asking: establish what is complimentary and only agree to paid dishes you want to order. Under the rule effective from 30 January 2026, restaurants may charge only for food and drink ordered by the customer; compulsory service, table, cover or similar charges are prohibited, while tips remain voluntary.

A useful rule:
If a restaurant seems to be making its prices confusing or refuses to explain the bill,
choose another place before ordering. Türkiye offers plenty of alternatives.
