Home Fires in Türkiye: Preparation, Evacuation and Emergency Calls
If a fire or smoke threatens you now, leave by a safe route if possible and call 112 from safety. Do not re-enter for belongings. Planning ahead helps you act quickly, but follow emergency responders’ instructions.
Prepare an escape plan
Identify flat exits, the stairs and an alternative route if available, and choose a meeting point outside. Keep corridors and doors clear and ensure the household knows the address, apartment number and how to call for help.
Discuss children, older people and anyone who needs mobility assistance in advance, and arrange feasible help with family and building management. A planned route may not be safe during a fire; follow firefighters’ instructions.
Smoke, warning and evacuation
If you see fire or smoke, warn others and leave immediately if the route is safe. Do not use the lift; use safe stairs. If there is smoke on an escape route that remains safe, stay low near the floor and move toward the exit; do not cross a smoke-filled corridor. Close doors behind you if possible without delaying your escape.
If smoke or a burning smell is coming from behind a door, do not open or touch it; seek another safe route. Call 112 from safety and give the address, floor and location of anyone trapped.
If you cannot get out
If smoke or fire makes escape unsafe, stay in a room with a closable door away from the danger, close the door and block gaps with fabric if possible without putting yourself at risk. Call 112, give your exact location and follow instructions.
Signal from a window if safe, but do not open it automatically; follow the instructions from 112 and do not jump. Do not open a smoke-affected door for belongings or assume the corridor is safe without rescue guidance.
Cooking oil and electrical fires
Never pour water on burning oil; it can spread the flames. Move away, get others out and close the room door as you leave if possible, then call 112 from safety.
Do not touch a burning appliance or damaged wire or use water on an electrical fire. Do not attempt to switch off electricity or gas if reaching the switch or valve is unsafe; tell emergency responders.
Extinguishers and prevention
Know the location, type, service condition and use of an extinguisher before an emergency. Ask management about the evacuation plan and alarms. Do not use an agent or extinguisher unsuitable for the fire.
Attempt to extinguish a fire only if it is small, safe to approach, you have suitable equipment and training, and a clear escape route behind you. If unsure, leave and call emergency services immediately. Test available smoke alarms regularly according to the manufacturer.
