Gas Safety at Home in Türkiye: Leaks, Emergency Calls and Safe Restoration
If you smell gas now, leave the affected area without operating electrical switches or using your phone there. Call 187 for a natural-gas emergency from a safe place outside; call 112 for fire, suspected poisoning or immediate danger to life. Do not wait for the landlord or a repair quotation. The immediate response and the later technical clearance are separate steps.
Selected official guidance reviewed: 26 October 2026. Technical follow-up depends on your distributor and the reason for shutdown.
Choose the right emergency route
187 is the natural-gas emergency line, not an LPG cylinder repair service or a bill-enquiry number. Tell the operator which fuel or equipment is involved; if you do not know, say so. For fire, injury or suspected poisoning, use 112 emergency assistance.
For cylinders, use the supplier and its authorised service; Aygaz cylinder guidance covers this separate system. Do not disconnect a regulator or move a leaking cylinder during an emergency.
| Situation | Immediate route | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Smell of piped natural gas | Leave; call 187 from outside the affected area | Do not search for the leak or test an appliance |
| LPG cylinder involved | Leave; call 112 for fire or immediate danger; arrange the LPG supplier's authorised service after safety is secured | Do not treat 187 as the cylinder supplier or move a leaking cylinder yourself |
| Headache, dizziness or weakness near a fuel-burning appliance | Fresh air and 112; describe possible carbon-monoxide exposure | Carbon monoxide is odourless: no gas smell does not prove safety |
Six actions when you smell natural gas
The Torosgaz emergency guide requires evacuation, avoiding electrical operation, and calling 187 from outside. Close an accessible valve and open doors/windows only if this can be done safely without delaying escape. Do not enter a dangerous area to reach equipment.
For a smell in the street, move away and report its location. Do not enter a basement or investigate a damaged pipe. Outdoor gas entering a building requires different ventilation decisions: Aksa's emergency guidance distinguishes the home, building and street. Follow the emergency team's directions rather than automatically opening every window.
Make a useful report from safety
Give the province/district, neighbourhood, street, building and flat number, plus a clear landmark. Explain where the smell was noticed, whether it is inside or outside, and whether anyone is unwell or fire is visible. Give a callback number and follow the operator's questions. A subscriber number helps only if already available; do not return for a bill, a photograph or a meter reading.
After emergency contact, inform the building manager and landlord from safety so they can coordinate access and shared installations. Record the incident time, report reference if supplied and the team's instructions. These are practical coordination notes, not a reason to delay evacuation.
Repair and reopening are different jobs
Ask what caused the shutdown and retain its notice. A certified installation firm handles installation work; the appliance manufacturer's authorised service handles appliance faults. Confirm certification through your own distributor; Aksa provides a regional certified-firm selector. A name in a search advertisement is not verification.
Aksa's installation guidance says a closed and sealed valve must not be opened or its seal disturbed. Required work and checks must be completed, followed by reopening by the distributor's authorised personnel. A repair invoice alone is not permission to restore gas. Ask your distributor what inspection, appointment and documents your particular shutdown requires; this guide promises no universal restoration deadline or fee.
Keep the shutdown notice, diagnosis, work/service forms and distributor clearance. Confirm separately whether appliance commissioning by its authorised service is required before use. Do not turn valves, bypass a detector or repeatedly reset a device to test whether the problem has gone.
Do not confuse a leak with carbon monoxide
İstanbul Provincial Health Directorate explains that carbon monoxide is colourless and odourless and may come from incomplete combustion. Headache, dizziness, weakness or unusual tiredness near combustion equipment require attention; several people becoming unwell together is especially concerning. Move to fresh air and call 112, explaining possible exposure. Do not re-enter a hazardous atmosphere to rescue someone; tell emergency services where they are.
A combustible-gas detector and a carbon-monoxide alarm detect different hazards. Verify the intended gas, installation position, maintenance and replacement instructions with the manufacturer and qualified installer. An alarm does not replace ventilation, professional checks or emergency action.
Before normal use resumes
Leave permanent air vents and flues unobstructed. Arrange appliance and flue checks through the appropriate authorised professionals, following the manufacturer and distributor's requirements. Have renovations, boiler replacement or enclosure of a balcony reviewed before work changes ventilation or flue conditions.
Review the incident with everyone at home: the safe exit, meeting place, emergency numbers and who needs assistance. Keep the distributor's ordinary service channel separately for appointments and paperwork. Disputes over repair costs can follow once safety is secured; neither an argument about payment nor an apparently working boiler replaces technical clearance.
Common questions
The smell disappeared. May I reopen the valve?
No. Fading smell does not establish safety. Follow the emergency team's directions and the distributor's required clearance; never disturb a sealed valve.
Should I switch off the electricity first?
Do not operate electrical switches or breakers in the affected area, including switching them off. Leave and report from safety.
Should I call the landlord before 187?
Emergency reporting comes first. Notify the landlord and manager from safety afterwards to coordinate access and follow-up.
Does a working stove prove the boiler is safe?
No. Appliance operation does not demonstrate safe combustion, an intact flue or clearance after a shutdown.
Is 187 the number for an LPG cylinder fault?
It is the natural-gas emergency line. Identify LPG explicitly; use 112 for fire or immediate danger and the cylinder supplier's authorised service for technical follow-up after safety is secured.
