A Turkish tax identification number — Vergi Kimlik Numarası can be important for foreign nationals dealing with:
- Bank accounts.
- Property purchases.
- Certain residence-related transactions.
- Official taxes and fees.
What is a tax number?
A financial identifier:- It is issued through Türkiye's Revenue Administration — Gelir İdaresi Başkanlığı (GİB).
- It identifies the person in the relevant financial and tax records.
For foreign nationals:- A number issued before a taxable activity is registered may be described as:
- “Potansiyel Vergi Kimlik Numarası” — potential tax identification number.
- A tax ID number for foreigners.
- A number issued before a taxable activity is registered may be described as:
When might you need it?
When opening a Turkish bank account, if the bank requires a tax number for your status.
For property purchases or related transactions.
For certain official payments and public fees.
In some residence, university or investment procedures, where requested.
How to apply
At a tax office — Vergi Dairesi:- Contact an appropriate tax office and check its current application arrangements.
- Prepare:
- Your original passport and a photocopy. GİB's published circular also provides for an officially accepted certified copy; ask the office which route applies.
- Your address information and any address evidence the office requests.
- Complete the requested personal details, which can include:
- Given name and surname.
- Father's and mother's names.
- Date of birth.
- Nationality.
- Your address, including your Turkish address if applicable.
- Once the application is accepted and processed, keep the tax-number document or system printout supplied by the office.
Online, through GİB's official digital service:- The Digital Tax Office offers “Yabancılar İçin Potansiyel Vergi Kimlik Numarası Başvurusu” — Potential Tax Number Application for Foreigners. Use the official service, rather than an unofficial site requesting passport details.
- The general process is:
- Enter the passport details requested by the form.
- Complete the personal, contact and address information accurately, including any identity-number field applicable to your case.
- Submit the form and follow its result or further instructions. Save the number or document when issued; an incomplete form or submission alone does not guarantee issuance.
- Forms and validation requirements can change, so:
- Read GİB's current instructions.
- If professional help is necessary, use a properly authorised accountant or adviser and clarify the service and fee. Routine issuance should not be confused with paid commercial advice.
Using the number
At a bank:- Where required, the bank records it against your customer and account details.
- It may appear in documents associated with your banking record.
At public offices:- Use it when requested for relevant fees or tax-related transactions.
In digital services:- Some official or financial services may request it when setting up or identifying an account. Follow that service's own sign-in rules; possessing a tax number does not itself create an e‑Devlet account.
Practical checks
Keep a secure paper and digital copy, such as a PDF or a photograph on your phone.
Check that your name and other details match your passport exactly.
Share the number only when necessary with a legitimate organisation, such as your bank, a public authority or an authorised accountant.
If your passport or personal details change, ask GİB whether the record needs updating. Do not apply for a duplicate number simply because your passport has changed.
In practice:
A tax number helps identify you in financial and official records connected with:
- Banking.
- Formal purchases.
- Public transactions.
