📌 Quick overview:
As a resident in Türkiye, you are likely to deal with:

  • Residence documents.
  • Contracts.
  • Bills.
  • Banking records.
  • Health and education documents.
Losing a document or struggling to find it can make the next application unnecessarily stressful. This guide sets out a simple, practical way to keep your paperwork organised.

1️⃣ Give essential documents special care

  • 🪪 Passports and residence documents
    • Your original passport.
    • Your residence-permit card — İkamet.
    • Clear colour copies of both. Copies are useful backups, but they do not automatically replace an original or certified document when one is required.
  • 📄 Contracts
    • Your tenancy agreement.
    • Purchase contracts, for example for a vehicle or property.
    • Employment contracts, where applicable.

2️⃣ Divide the file into categories

  • 📁 Folder 1: identity and residence
    • Passports for each family member, if you are organising a household file.
    • Residence-permit cards.
    • Any certified copies you already hold.
  • 🏠 Folder 2: housing and address
    • Your current tenancy agreement and any addenda.
    • Official address-registration evidence — Adres Kaydı — where available.
    • Written receipts for your tenancy deposit — Depozito — where issued.

3️⃣ Keep secure digital backups

  • 📲 Photograph or scan each important document
    • Your passport.
    • Your residence card.
    • Contracts.
    • Translations and supporting documents.
  • 💾 Store a backup somewhere you can trust
    • A reputable cloud-storage service with suitably protected access.
    • Or an external drive or USB device kept in a safe place.
  • Protect sensitive copies with appropriate device and account security, such as encryption, a strong password and two-step sign-in where available. Avoid public sharing links; keep a usable backup rather than the only copy on a phone that could be lost.

4️⃣ Update the file when something changes

  • 📌 Moved home?
    • Add the new tenancy agreement.
    • Move the previous agreement into an “Expired contracts” subfolder.
  • 🪪 Received a new residence card?
    • Keep the previous document behind the new one where you may lawfully retain it and it remains useful. Follow any requirement to surrender a card; do not discard useful records without checking whether you may still need them.
    • Photograph the new card and update your digital copies. Clearly mark an older copy as expired so it is not mistaken for the current document.

5️⃣ Why is this worth doing?

  • ⏰ Save time and reduce stress
    • You are less likely to spend half a day searching for one sheet of paper before an official appointment.
  • 📂 Respond more easily to document requests
    • If a public authority, bank or hospital asks for a particular record, you can find the relevant paper or digital copy quickly. Check whether it needs the original, a certified copy or an updated document before submitting it.

A practical safeguard:
An organised document file is a useful first line of protection for everyday administration in Türkiye. Spending an hour putting it in order can:

  • Save considerable time and anxiety when the next official procedure comes along.
  • Make dealings with banks, Migration Management, population offices and other institutions easier to manage.
