📌 Quick overview:
You will see KDV on many receipts and invoices in Türkiye. It stands for Katma Değer Vergisi — value added tax, or VAT. This guide explains:

  • What KDV means.
  • How it appears on a bill.
  • Why different goods and services can have different rates.

1️⃣ What is KDV?

  • 💰 A tax on taxable goods and services
    • VAT forms part of the amount paid by the customer. Where a price is stated before VAT, the tax is added to calculate the VAT-inclusive total.
    • The rate depends on the legally defined category of goods or services and the rules in force for that transaction.
  • 🏛️ It applies to many commercial transactions
    • Purchases from shops.
    • Taxable services, including hotel stays, restaurant services and certain professional services. Exemptions and special rules mean that not every transaction has VAT charged in the same way.

2️⃣ Where does KDV appear on the receipt?

  • 🧾 On an invoice or receipt — Fatura / Fiş — you may find:
    • The price before VAT, where shown separately.
    • The VAT rate, such as 20%, 10% or 1%, depending on the relevant category.
    • The VAT amount in Turkish lira.
    • The final VAT-inclusive total.
  • 📌 A consumer retail shelf price should already include applicable taxes. The receipt can then show how much of that price is VAT; this is not a reason to add the same tax again at the till.

3️⃣ Why do the rates differ?

  • 📦 General consumer goods and many services
    • The Revenue Administration’s published schedule sets a general rate of 20% for taxable transactions outside the reduced-rate lists. The rate applicable on the transaction date remains the relevant one.
  • 🥛 Specified essentials and other categories
    • Reduced rates apply to goods and services specifically included in the statutory lists; policy objectives and the precise legal classification determine the treatment.
    • Some food products and other listed supplies qualify. For a food, furniture or other purchase, check the actual category instead of assuming that every essential item or all furniture carries a reduced rate. The published lists contain 1% and 10% categories as well as exceptions.
    • Official decisions can change the details. A qualified accountant or tax adviser is the appropriate person to confirm a technical classification.
  • 🏠 Property and other special transactions
    • Different treatment or transitional rules may apply depending on the transaction, the property’s characteristics, size, location and relevant project or permit dates. Check the particular case rather than transferring a rate from another property.

4️⃣ What matters to an ordinary consumer?

  • 💸 Compare the final amount payable
    • For everyday supermarket or restaurant purchases, compare the VAT-inclusive price you will actually pay. Consumer prices should include applicable taxes.
  • 🧾 Keep your invoice or receipt
    • It can help with:
      • A warranty claim for an appliance.
      • Proving the price when making a complaint.
      • Official or other transactions requiring proof of purchase, for example for furniture or appliances.
  • 📱 Check online prices
    • Before buying, check:
      • Whether the stated price includes VAT and what the checkout total contains.
      • The wording “KDV dahil”, meaning “VAT included”. A commercial quotation and a consumer retail offer may be presented differently, so read the terms carefully.

5️⃣ Running a business or commercially letting a furnished flat?

  • Get advice if you intend to:
    • Let furnished accommodation as a commercial activity.
    • Open a shop or another business.
    • Provide freelance services and issue official invoices.
  • Depending on the activity and your circumstances, you may need:
    • Full tax registration and any other required permissions.
    • A qualified accountant to explain:
      • The VAT treatment and rates relevant to your business.
      • How to issue compliant invoices.
      • How to prepare and submit the required tax returns.

A useful everyday skill:
You do not need to become a tax specialist to live in or visit Türkiye. Understanding the KDV entries on a receipt helps you:

  • Understand the pre-tax price and the tax included in your purchase.
  • Compare offers more accurately.
  • Make better-informed decisions about larger purchases, such as appliances and furniture.
If you move into business, getting a good accountant involved early can save considerable confusion. 😉
