📌 At a glance
Many official procedures in Türkiye require:
  • A sworn translation — Yeminli Tercüme.
  • And/or notarial certification — Noter Onayı.
This introductory guide explains when these may be needed and outlines the process. It provides general information, not legal advice.

1️⃣ What is a sworn translation?

  • 📝 A sworn translator:
    • For notarial work, this is a translator whose language competence the notary has accepted and whose oath is recorded at the notarial office.
    • The translator identifies and signs their translation, commonly adding their stamp. Confirm that the intended notary can certify that translator’s work.
  • Documents commonly translated for official use include:
    • Birth, marriage and death certificates.
    • School and university qualifications.
    • Contracts and other foreign documents needed for official procedures in Türkiye.

2️⃣ What is a notary — Noter — and what do they do?

  • 🏛️ A notary provides official notarial services through a Noterlik office. These include, as applicable:
    • Certifying signatures.
    • Drawing up or certifying certain contracts.
    • Dealing with powers of attorney.
    • Certifying translations under the relevant notarial procedure.
  • After the sworn translator prepares the document:
    • The document and translation are presented to the notary.
    • The notary checks the translator’s authority and signature in accordance with the applicable procedure.
    • The notary adds the required certification, signature and seal.
Notarial certification gives the translation its formal certified status where this is required. It does not guarantee that every receiving authority will accept the document for every purpose; the authority’s own document requirements still apply.

3️⃣ When might you need both translation and notarisation?

General examples include:
  • 🏫 University-related procedures, such as recognition or equivalence of qualifications and enrolment on a course, where certified documents are requested.
  • An official authority requesting a certified Turkish translation of a foreign document, such as a marriage certificate or family record.
Check the requirements for your particular procedure rather than assuming the same rule applies to every institution or document.

4️⃣ How does it work in practice?

The basic preparation is:
  1. Identify the document and language pair. For example, you may need a birth certificate issued in your home country translated from English or Arabic into Turkish.
  2. Provide the appropriate document. Check whether the translator and receiving authority require the original or an officially certified copy.
  3. Agree the arrangements in advance. Confirm the price and when the translation will be ready, then arrange any required notarial certification.

5️⃣ Practical tips

  • 🧾 Ask the authority requesting the document:
    • Is a sworn translation sufficient?
    • Must it also be notarised?
  • Ask how the translator calculates the price, for example by page or word, and request a clear quotation.
  • Allow separately for notarial charges. These follow the applicable notarial fee rules and should not be confused with the translator’s own quotation.

Conclusion
Sworn translation and notarisation are common parts of official procedures for foreign nationals in Türkiye, particularly when using documents issued abroad.

Before arranging a translation:
  • Ask the receiving authority exactly what it requires.
  • Choose a reliable sworn translator appropriate for the notarial procedure.
  • Remember that notarial certification is an additional step required in many cases.
