Forgotten Bank Accounts in Türkiye: Limitation and Mistaken Transfers
An old account in your name, or a deceased relative’s name, can remain unattended for years. Finding it later does not necessarily mean the money is recoverable. Establish whether it remains with the bank, was lawfully transferred and recorded as TMSF income, or may have been transferred by mistake.
Start with the institution, product and last documented claim, transaction or written instruction. Forgetting a password or not opening an app does not establish the legal position.
Establish when the ten years began
The TMSF limitation explanation describes deposits, participation funds, entrusted assets and receivables held at banks that remain unclaimed for ten years after the owner’s last claim, transaction or written instruction. The relevant starting point is not necessarily account opening. Ask the bank which date and records it used.
Do not assume that an app login or marketing message interrupts the period. Identify the documented act or instruction and ask the bank to assess its effect. Do not automatically extend this process to e-money wallets or every investment. Establish the legal asset and custodian first, rather than directing every old asset claim to TMSF.
Understand the annual notice cycle
Under the official TMSF process, banks send registered letters with return receipt by the end of January for balances of TRY 1,000 or more that became time-barred by the previous year-end. Lists are published online from the beginning of February through the end of May by banks and the relevant bodies. The letter threshold does not exempt smaller amounts from limitation.
The guidance requires contacting the bank and taking an act that interrupts limitation before 15 June in the relevant notice cycle. On 26 October 2026 that date has passed for the ordinary 2026 cycle. It is not an open future deadline. Check the correct year’s notice and any specific official amendment; do not wait until next February merely because you have only now discovered the account.
Identify the position before requesting payment
An annual list is a warning tool, not a complete inventory of everything a person owns. No result does not prove that no account exists; a matching name does not prove an account belongs to you. Reconcile identity numbers, former names, branch and account details with the bank through an official channel.
| Position | What to request | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Money remains at the bank | Account status and documented action before the relevant deadline | An unavailable app means ownership has disappeared |
| Name appears on an annual list | Correct year, identity, balance and deadline | Every matching name is your account |
| Lawful transfer recorded as income | Bank confirmation and the applicable basis | Ordinary recovery is guaranteed |
| Possible mistaken transfer | Head-office investigation of interruption evidence | A recovery request alone is sufficient |
Distinguish lawful transfer from error
TMSF’s process states that money transferred to the Fund and recorded as income through the lawful process cannot be returned. This is therefore not a universal recovery service for forgotten accounts. An intermediary’s fee or a screenshot of an old list does not establish recoverability.
For an allegedly mistaken transfer, the owner, authorised representative or heir writes to the bank’s general directorate. Include evidence interrupting the period, such as passbook records, receipts or instructions, together with identity and the relevant power of attorney or inheritance certificate. The bank investigates its records. If satisfied that the transfer was mistaken, the bank requests return from TMSF with supporting evidence. Payment is not automatic.
Follow six practical steps
Keep a separate file for each bank. Do not send identity papers to someone claiming to have found money in your name. Obtain contact details from the bank’s own website and retain submission references, responses and receipt dates.
Deal with heirs and prevent forgotten accounts
An heir may use the mistaken-transfer route with proof of heirship. Family relationship or knowing a password is not a substitute. Where several banks are involved, keep separate requests and records for each. Discovering an account does not authorise using the deceased’s card or credentials to withdraw it.
Keep a secure inventory of institutions and account numbers and update your contact details. Review accounts you no longer need and arrange formal closure after resolving obligations. Sharing an institution list with a trusted person differs from sharing passwords. Failure to receive a paper letter does not remove the need to monitor your money.
Common questions
Is every unused account lost after ten years?
Check the last claim, transaction or written instruction and the notice/transfer process. Do not count only from opening.
Does the TRY 1,000 threshold exempt smaller amounts?
No. That threshold concerns the registered-letter warning, not a general limitation exemption.
Does logging into the app restart the period?
Do not assume so. Ask which act interrupts the period and how it applies to the records.
Does TMSF return all forgotten money?
No. Lawfully transferred sums recorded as income cannot be returned under the guidance; alleged errors require investigation.
Where should I start if I have a recent receipt?
Write to the bank’s general directorate requesting investigation and attach the receipt, identity and proof of authority.
