Credit Card Statements in Türkiye: Billing Dates, Minimum Payments and Interest

A credit card statement is a dated bill. The amount currently shown in the app, the statement balance and the available credit limit answer different questions. Start with the statement for the relevant month and check what must reach the card account by its payment deadline.

The rates below are monthly regulatory ceilings for October 2026; your bank’s disclosed rate, transaction type and dates determine the actual calculation.

⁦1️⃣⁩ Identify the bill and its dates

On the statement, locate hesap kesim tarihi (closing date), son ödeme tarihi (payment deadline), dönem borcu (statement balance) and asgari ödeme tutarı (minimum payment). Compare the transaction list with your receipts and check payments, refunds, instalments and any previous balance separately.

The Garanti BBVA FAQ describes a statement as the record between successive closing dates. A purchase appearing in the app after closing need not belong to the bill already issued. Record the date and currency printed on that bill rather than estimating the amount from available credit.

FieldWhat to establishPractical check
Statement balanceAmount billed for this cycleMatch payments and posted refunds
Minimum paymentRequired minimum for this billRead the printed amount, not an old percentage
Available limitCapacity remaining on the cardDo not use it as the amount due
Future instalmentsCommitments for later cyclesKeep their amounts and end dates in your budget

⁦2️⃣⁩ Read the current minimum correctly

İş Bankası’s current explanation states a 20% minimum for the TRY 100,000-and-below limit band and 40% above it, with implementation dated 3 October 2026. This is a limit threshold, not the statement-debt thresholds used for interest below. Older material describing TRY 50,000 should not be applied automatically to a current bill.

The same bank page uses both customer-limit and card-limit wording. If you hold several cards, ask the issuer which limit it used and request the minimum calculation for your statement. Do not combine limits yourself or reduce the printed minimum based on an online calculator. Foreign-currency bills and special product terms also require their own check.

⁦3️⃣⁩ Separate full payment from partial payment

Paying the minimum leaves a balance outstanding. Garanti BBVA’s sample card agreement explains contractual interest on the remaining statement balance after a qualifying partial payment; below-minimum payments can also trigger default interest on the unpaid minimum. Cash-like transactions and specified bill payments have different interest-start rules in that agreement.

For a purchase-only example, a TRY 10,000 bill with a TRY 2,000 minimum still leaves TRY 8,000 of principal after paying that minimum. This arithmetic is not a bank quotation: the actual interest depends on dates, transaction classification, disclosed rates and applicable taxes. Ask for a dated breakdown if the next statement’s interest is unclear.

⁦4️⃣⁩ Check the ceiling for the right month

The TCMB October 2026 table sets monthly TRY purchase ceilings: statement debt below TRY 30,000, 3.25% contractual / 3.55% default; TRY 30,000–180,000, 3.75% / 4.05%; above TRY 180,000, 4.25% / 4.55%. Cash withdrawal/use has a separate 4.25% / 4.55% ceiling. Foreign-currency rates have their own column.

These are maximum rates, not a uniform charge or an annual percentage. Banks set rates within the ceiling. Match the applicable month, currency, debt band and transaction type before querying a difference. Do not estimate a total bill by multiplying all transactions by one headline rate; ask the bank to identify the interest base, days, rate and taxes separately.

⁦5️⃣⁩ Follow six payment checks

⁦1️⃣⁩ Download the relevant statement and record its closing date, deadline, currency, balance and minimum.

⁦2️⃣⁩ Reconcile transactions, existing instalments, payments and posted refunds; flag an unfamiliar item promptly through the issuer’s official channel.

⁦3️⃣⁩ Choose the amount you can pay and understand the remaining balance; if payment is difficult, contact the bank before the deadline for available terms and written costs.

⁦4️⃣⁩ Confirm the payment channel’s cut-off and posting rules; another bank’s transfer receipt alone does not establish that the card was credited in time.

⁦5️⃣⁩ For automatic payment, check whether the instruction covers the minimum or full bill and ensure funds are available; verify execution afterwards.

⁦6️⃣⁩ Keep the successful card-payment record and check the next statement for allocation, remaining debt and any interest; request a correction breakdown in writing if needed.

⁦6️⃣⁩ Handle disputed items without guessing the payable bill

A refund promised by a merchant, a dispute reference and a refund already credited are different records. Ask the issuer how the disputed amount affects the minimum and balance due while the investigation is open. Do not assume that opening a dispute suspends the whole bill.

Keep the statement, transaction reference, merchant response, payment evidence and bank reply together. Our separate card-dispute guide explains merchant refunds and chargebacks; this guide concerns the bill’s payment mechanics. For an unauthorised item, contact the issuer immediately and follow its card-security instructions. Never post the full card number, security code or verification password in a forum complaint.

⁦7️⃣⁩ Frequently asked questions

Does paying the minimum clear the debt?
No. It pays only the required minimum; the remaining balance and applicable interest still need attention.

Is the minimum based on the same bands as interest?
No. The minimum uses the relevant limit band; TCMB’s TRY purchase-interest bands use statement debt. Ask the issuer to explain your calculation.

Is the TCMB ceiling my bank’s exact rate?
No. Check the rate disclosed by your issuer for the applicable date and transaction.

Can I assume a pending refund pays this month’s bill?
No. Confirm whether it has posted and how the bank allocates it before adjusting your payment.

What if the automatic payment fails?
Check the card account promptly and contact the bank through an official channel. An instruction by itself is not proof of successful payment.
