In Türkiye, you may need to show that a payment was actually made: for rent, medical treatment, work or other services. Two useful records are a dekont, the receipt for an individual transaction, and a bank statement covering a period.
Editorial clarification — 8 October 2026: A receipt is evidence of the transaction it records; it does not automatically settle every dispute or prove that an obligation has been fulfilled. Monetary rental payments generally must be documented through a bank or PTT under the applicable tax rules. A cash receipt alone does not replace that requirement.
1. When is a dekont enough, and when do you need a statement?
Use a transaction receipt to identify a particular payment, such as one month's rent, a transfer to another person or a service payment. Check that its status shows a completed payment rather than an instruction waiting to be processed.
A statement is useful when the recipient needs several transactions over a month or a longer period. Ask the organisation requesting evidence whether it requires an official PDF, a branch-certified copy or another format.
2. Make the purpose of the payment clear
Enter an accurate reference when transferring money. For rent, for example, include the relevant month and, where helpful, the property or tenancy reference: “Rent — December 2026”. A clear reference helps connect the transfer to the payment being discussed; it is not a guarantee that a later disagreement cannot arise.
3. Common weaknesses in payment evidence
• Paying cash without a record, and overlooking rules that require a bank or PTT channel.
• Sending a transfer with no useful reference, then trying to explain its purpose months later.
• Keeping only a cropped screenshot without the amount, date, recipient, reference or transaction status.
Download the bank's receipt when available and keep the original file. Check the recipient and amount before confirming the transfer.
4. Organise your records
Create a secure folder called “Payment Records”. Keep monthly rent receipts, records of larger transfers and important statements, preferably in the bank's downloadable format. Use consistent file names so that a requested document is easy to find.
Share only the information the recipient needs. A full statement can reveal unrelated purchases, account details and balances; where permitted, use the receipt for the relevant payment instead.
The practical point
An accurate reference and a completed transaction receipt make a payment easier to trace. Keep both, and follow any separate documentation requirements imposed by the organisation or the applicable rules.
