Bank Powers of Attorney in Türkiye: Bank Acceptance, Transaction Limits and Revocation
If someone needs to carry out a bank transaction for you, start with the bank before issuing the power of attorney. Ask whether representation is accepted for the operation and which wording, documents and channel it requires. A formally issued document does not guarantee every transaction or channel for the representative.
Build a clear operating file: a specific task, authority accepted and recorded by the bank, evidence of completed work, and follow-up when authority expires or is revoked.
Define the transaction before drafting
Write down the bank, account or product and intended operation: obtaining a statement, withdrawing money, making a transfer or closing an account. Check each power separately instead of using “all transactions” without understanding its effect. Access to information is different from control over funds. Acting for you does not make the representative a joint account holder.
Clause A.10 of İş Bankası’s published banking services agreement addresses authorising another person to withdraw through instructions acceptable to the bank. This specific example does not establish that an informal letter, message or general power is sufficient for every purpose or bank.
Request bank review before paying issuance costs
Ask the branch about identity evidence for both parties, accepted document form and any wording or powers it requires. Clarify originals, copies, translation and the review procedure, especially for a document issued outside Türkiye. Check the receiving institution’s requirements before paying for certification or translation.
Clause 7.1 of Garanti BBVA’s investment and brokerage agreement addresses a notarised power and notification of the representative’s name, signature specimen and scope; the bank may request changes to the wording. This is an investment-contract example. Check your current-account or other product’s conditions rather than automatically applying it.
| Request | Authority to examine | Bank confirmation needed |
|---|---|---|
| Statement or document | Information, account and period | Who receives it and through which channel |
| Withdrawal or transfer | Amount, currency, destination and scope | Does the wording authorise this operation? |
| Deposit or closure | Breaking, renewal, balance payment and closure | Which products does acceptance cover? |
| Revocation or restriction | Representative, document and affected powers | Receipt of notice and updated status |
Make limits understandable and usable
Discuss the duration, financial limits, transfer destination, excluded operations and any power to appoint someone else. Do not assume a verbal restriction between you will be visible to the bank employee. Ask whether the proposed restriction can be applied in the required wording before signing.
For example, you want an account closed and the balance sent to your other account. Check whether the document covers closure, settlement and transfer to the specified destination, and whether a card or deposit requires separate authority. Do not add borrowing, guarantees or extensive investment powers simply because they might be useful later. Understand the whole document and obtain qualified assistance for sensitive drafting.
Separate representation from passwords
Request an approved operating route for the representative and establish whether work is branch-only or another channel is available. A power of attorney does not establish permission to hand over your app, SIM or verification codes. Do not share passwords, and retain independent access to your notifications and contact method.
Keep the request, receipt, destination account, amount and reference, then review the result in your statement. If the bank refuses, obtain a specific reason: identity evidence, wording, product authority or an unavailable channel? Address the actual issue. Refusal does not authorise another person to try again using your personal credentials.
Complete six documented steps
Keep bank requirements, issuance, review and registration in one file. Approval of draft wording does not establish that the representative has actually been activated in the bank’s records.
Notify the bank and follow up revocation
Ask the competent issuing authority and bank about revocation or removal of specific powers. Keep the document, notification date and evidence of receipt. Issuing a notarial revocation or telling the representative does not establish automatic updating of every bank record. Clause 7.2 of the Garanti investment example emphasises written notification to the bank of revocation or reduced authority; do not generalise one delivery method to every product.
Ask which transactions completed before notification arrived, which remain pending and whether separate instructions need cancellation. Ending authority does not establish reversal of a completed transaction or account closure. For suspected misuse, contact the bank immediately through a trusted channel, request appropriate protection and record the transactions. Receipt of a notice does not guarantee reimbursement.
Common questions
Will any general power of attorney suffice?
Do not assume so. Have the bank check the scope, form and operation against its requirements.
Can a representative open a new account for me?
Ask the bank about acceptance, documents and verification for that operation. No general guarantee is established here.
May I give them an app code to simplify things?
Do not share passwords or codes. Request approved authority and an operating channel for the representative.
Does every foreign power require an apostille?
Check the issuing country, document and receiving institution’s specific requirements; do not assume one condition for every case.
Does revocation recover an earlier transfer?
Do not assume so. Ending authority and challenging or recovering an earlier transaction are separate processes.
