Limestone formations in Ballıca Cave near Pazar, Tokat.

Zile, Turhal and Pazar combine the history of agricultural towns with the natural formations of inland Tokat province. Castles rise above the towns and caravanserais recall trading journeys, while Ballıca Cave represents a geological heritage distinct from the historic buildings. Plains, watercourses and villages provide a common setting, with each town retaining monuments and an urban identity shaped by its location and local history.

🏰 Zile and its historic castle

Zile Castle stands on a hill overlooking the town and plain. Differences in its walls and towers reflect repairs and additions through successive periods. The date of its earliest foundation and its original builder are not established conclusively, so its history is interpreted through surviving remains, inscriptions and variations in construction. Its elevated site clearly conveys its role in surveying the surrounding area and maintaining a fortified centre within the town.

Features include a gateway, towers and a structure later associated with the town's civic life. The area also connects with ancient Zela and accounts of Caesar's campaigns, although specific historical interpretations depend on the evidence and documented information available. Houses and streets around the hill show how the military landmark relates to residential settlement.

🌾 Turhal: a castle above the plain

Turhal has a different urban character but, like Zile, contains a high point bearing castle remains above the town. Surviving towers and foundations show how rocky terrain was used for defence. Views across the surrounding plain reveal the importance of agriculture to local identity. Turhal lies within the Yeşilırmak river system, its water and plains connecting it with other towns in the province.

Villages, fields, religious monuments and local remains surround the town, while modern transport networks run beside older settlement. Comparing the two castles reveals the variety of fortified sites within Tokat. Building position, hill shape and connections with the plain all affect their appearance, even where their original functions of observation and protection were similar.

🪨 Ballıca Cave and its formations

Ballıca Cave lies near its namesake village in Pazar district. Connected chambers occupy different levels, with varied limestone formations including stalagmites, stalactites, columns and distinctive onion-shaped stalactites. They reveal the deposition of minerals from water over long geological periods within the cave's particular environment.

Chambers have names reflecting their shapes, such as the Column Hall and Mushroom Hall, and some areas remain closed to visitors. Bat colonies add habitat value to the geological interest. Notice the varying sizes, colours and distribution of formations, and remember that their present appearance results from slow processes continuing within parts of the system.

🧱 Pazar and Mahperi Hatun Caravanserai

Mahperi Hatun Caravanserai near Pazar is associated with Seljuk architecture and caravan routes. Its open and covered sections, entrance and arcades display the stonework characteristic of Anatolian caravanserais. The layout reflects a caravan's need for circulation, storage and rest within a protected building, adding an architectural landmark to the agricultural plains.

Wetlands such as Lake Kaz in the Pazar–Turhal area provide another natural setting, with aquatic plants and birds. They broaden the local landscape beyond the cave and plain. Carved stone in the caravanserai and castles, natural rock within the cave, and water and vegetation in the wetlands come together within one rural region.

📌 Practical notes

Follow the lit route through the cave. Do not touch limestone formations or disturb bats. Castle steps and cave surfaces call for secure footwear, and maintenance can affect access. Keep a respectful distance when watching wetland birds, and stay out of undeveloped routes and closed areas.
