Sultan Sazlığı National Park in Kayseri: Access, Birdwatching and Visit Planning
Sultan Sazlığı National Park in Kayseri includes wetlands and birdwatching sites. This guide helps you choose a visitor point, plan transport and respect protected nature.
Where is the park and where should you start?
The park lies south of Kayseri city within the districts of Yeşilhisar, Develi and Yahyalı. Search for the visitor centre at Ovaçiftlik in Yeşilhisar or another point confirmed by management; entering a lake name on a map does not establish the visitor entrance.
Nature conservation authorities list a visitor centre at Ovaçiftlik, a visitor information centre at Sindelhöyük in Develi, and day-use sites. Check which centre and point are open and suit your visit before travelling.
Getting there from Kayseri and returning
If driving to the visitor centre, review the Kayseri–Niğde route towards Yeşilhisar and Ovaçiftlik. Journey time depends on road conditions and weather; confirm the actual entrance and parking with management.
Without a car, ask about transport from Kayseri to the area and onward travel from town to the entrance. Book or check the last return before setting out; do not assume an intercity bus reaches the visitor centre itself.
Choose a visit that fits your time
| Option | Why visit | Confirm before arrival |
|---|---|---|
| Visitor centre | Learn about the wetland and birds first | Centre opening and available services |
| Observation point | Watch birds from permitted places | Route and tower or platform status |
| Nature tour, if offered | Explore wetlands with a suitable operator | Operation, permits, duration and cost |
Not every facility or tour operates every day. Ask management which points and activities are available rather than relying on old photographs or adverts.
Watch birds responsibly
Resident and migratory bird sightings vary with season, water levels and weather; no particular species is guaranteed. Choose a point permitted by management and bring binoculars if available.
Keep away from nests and young, do not feed birds or play calls to attract them, and respect paths and barriers. Do not enter reeds, water or closed areas to take a photograph.
Weather, safety and facilities
Check wind, cold or daytime heat before travelling and bring water, suitable shoes and clothing. Wet ground and the experience can change with water levels; obey management instructions when a route closes.
Families and visitors with disabilities should ask about terrain, steps, toilets and parking at their chosen point. Do not assume every tower or part of the park is accessible to wheelchairs or pushchairs.
Practical steps before your trip
Rules and photography
Ask the competent authority about drone use, commercial filming and water-based or research activities. Permission for ordinary photography does not grant access to protected zones.
If a tour stops or a platform closes, do not assume the whole park is closed. Ask what remains available and choose a suitable alternative. Call 112 for immediate danger.
