Cappadocia 2026
Cappadocia is a broad region in Central Anatolia, rather than a single city. Its best-known sights cluster around Göreme, Uçhisar, Ürgüp and Avanos, alongside underground cities, valleys and historic villages across parts of Nevşehir, Aksaray, Niğde and Kayseri.Allow at least three days for a rewarding first visit. Four or five days give you more room to explore the valleys and underground cities without rushing between stops.
Göreme
Göreme is the main tourism hub, with cave hotels, restaurants, tour offices and viewpoints for watching the balloons. It is a convenient base for a first visit, close to the open-air museum and Love, Pigeon, Rose and Red valleys.
Uçhisar
Uçhisar is known for its towering rock castle and broad views across Pigeon Valley and Cappadocia's rock formations. It feels quieter than central Göreme and has upmarket cave hotels and restaurants with views, although there are fewer shops and everyday services.
Ürgüp
Ürgüp combines an old town with hotels, restaurants and surrounding vineyards. It suits visitors looking for a relaxed stay with a good range of services.Mustafapaşa village, Gomeda Valley and several important rock-cut sites are nearby.
Avanos
Avanos stands beside the Kızılırmak River and is known for pottery, traditional workshops, bridges and riverside restaurants.Set aside half a day to watch potters at work, stroll beside the river and browse the local shops.
Göreme Open-Air Museum
The museum brings together rock-cut churches and monastic buildings decorated with wall paintings.Arrive near opening time or later in the day to avoid the busiest periods. Some churches may require a separate ticket or have their own visitor arrangements.
The main valleys
Cappadocia's valleys range from easy walks to longer routes that call for suitable footwear and walking experience.
Love Valley
Known for its tall rock formations and open views, the valley can be enjoyed from elevated viewpoints or by walking through accessible sections.
Rose Valley
A rewarding walking area with coloured rock, small churches and good sunset viewpoints.
Red Valley
Connected to Rose Valley, it is particularly striking as the rock colours deepen towards sunset.
Pigeon Valley
Running between Göreme and Uçhisar, this valley has rock-cut dovecotes and scenic walking routes.
Sword Valley
Near Göreme Open-Air Museum, Sword Valley has sharp rock formations, churches and shorter walking routes.
Underground cities
Several underground settlements have been carved into the region's rock. Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı are among the best known.Their passages, rooms, stores and ventilation shafts extend across multiple levels. Low ceilings, narrow stairways and confined passages make parts of these sites unsuitable for visitors with limited mobility or claustrophobia.
Hot-air balloons
Balloons usually take off around sunrise when conditions permit. Wind or poor visibility can lead to cancellation even after a booking has been confirmed.- Book with a licensed operator.
- Stay several nights to leave another opportunity if a flight is cancelled.
- Keep the rest of your itinerary flexible rather than making the balloon flight its only focus.
- Check the official flight decision with your operator on the morning of departure.
- If watching from the ground, choose a safe viewpoint.
Where to stay
- Göreme: convenient for services, tours and balloon watching.
- Uçhisar: a good choice for views, quieter surroundings and upmarket hotels.
- Ürgüp: well suited to restaurants, the old town and a comfortable base.
- Avanos: ideal for a more local atmosphere, the river and pottery workshops.
- Mustafapaşa: attractive for historic architecture and a quieter stay away from the main crowds.
Getting around
A hire car offers the most flexibility for visiting villages, valleys and underground cities. Daily group tours also cover the main sightseeing routes.Public transport does not conveniently connect every attraction, and repeated taxi journeys can become expensive.
Getting to Cappadocia
The two main airports serving the region are Nevşehir Kapadokya and Kayseri. Transfers are available to accommodation areas, but book ahead or confirm their schedules before arrival.Intercity coaches also connect Nevşehir or Göreme with Ankara, İstanbul and other Turkish cities.
When to visit
Spring
Generally comfortable for walking, with possible rain and a noticeable difference between morning and evening temperatures.
Summer
Days are hot and dry, and visitor numbers rise. Plan outdoor sightseeing for early morning.
Autumn
A rewarding season for walking and photography, with relatively mild conditions.
Winter
Snow can make the rock formations especially beautiful, but severe cold can affect roads and balloon flights.
