İzmir Bird Sanctuary and the Gediz Delta: Access, Birdwatching and Conservation
Northwest of İzmir, fresh and salt water meet in the Gediz Delta, a habitat for birds and other wetland wildlife. This guide helps you plan a visit while respecting sensitive areas.
Where are the Gediz Delta and bird sanctuary?
The Gediz Delta is also known as İzmir Bird Sanctuary and extends across a broad area near Çiğli, Menemen, Foça and Karşıyaka. Search for the sanctuary visitor centre in Çiğli or the access point confirmed by the site managers rather than relying on the river name alone.
Salt pans, freshwater areas and lagoons coexist here. Some parts are sensitive or operational areas: reaching the delta does not mean that every route is open to visitors.
Getting there and planning your return
If driving, confirm the visitor-centre entrance, road and parking arrangements with the managers before leaving. Reaching Çiğli does not mean every entrance is connected by the same road; site conditions can affect access.
Without a car, ask the local transport operator for the nearest stop and onward travel to the entrance and back. Do not assume there is a direct bus to every observation point; allow extra time and check the last return service.
Choose how to visit
| Option | Experience | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Visitor centre and observation areas | Learn about birds and observe from permitted points | Whether the centre, tower and route are open that day |
| Walking or cycling | Explore an available route without disturbing birds | Open entrances, route conditions and bicycle availability |
| Boat tour, if offered | See the delta on an organised route | Current operator, departure point, booking and weather |
These are possible options, not services guaranteed every day. A municipal boat route differs from entering the sanctuary by land: confirm the starting point and area covered before booking.
When can you see birds?
The delta hosts resident and migratory birds, including flamingos and other species depending on the season and water conditions. No particular species is guaranteed on a given route or day; ask site managers what is available.
Choose a comfortable daylight visit and check weather and wind. Bring binoculars if possible, water, a hat and suitable protection; confirm before relying on binocular or bicycle hire.
Protecting the birds and wetlands
Observe quietly from permitted routes and points. Stay away from nests and young, do not feed birds or play calls to attract them, and do not enter marshes, saltworks or closed areas simply because a map shows a path.
Ask the managers about permits before using a drone or organising specialist photography or activities. Ordinary photography does not grant access to protected areas. Take your litter away and follow site instructions.
Practical steps before travelling
Families and accessibility
Choose a duration that suits children and older visitors, and stay in permitted areas. Ask in advance about toilets, ground conditions, steps and wheelchair or pushchair access: facilities vary by point.
Do not confuse İzmir Bird Sanctuary with Bird Paradise National Park at Lake Manyas in Balıkesir: they are separate sites with different managers and routes.
