Şebinkarahisar Castle on the rocky outcrop overlooking the town.
Şebinkarahisar lies in inland Giresun, distinguished by its rock-top castle, commercial heritage and Monastery of the Virgin Mary. Alucra and Çamoluk complete the picture with villages, valleys and uplands different from the province's coastal environment.
Şebinkarahisar Castle stands on Hacıkayası rock above the town. Surviving walls and buildings belong to several periods, revealing how fortification depended on the site's height and rocky nature. The castle gives the town its familiar profile, while the relationship between outcrop and settlement helps explain the choice of location for habitation and defence.
The historic area contains remains of stone commercial buildings known as the Taşhanlar. They reveal the town's role in trade, crafts and services, adding evidence of economic life alongside its defensive landmark. Stone buildings and lanes show how an inland centre developed around routes of movement and surrounding villages.
The Monastery of the Virgin Mary within a rock recess near Şebinkarahisar.
The monastery occupies a large rock recess in the Kayadibi area, with a multi-level building containing a church, rooms and service spaces. Its defining feature is the relationship between architecture and rock: the mountain itself forms part of the site's design. It preserves evidence of the area's religious heritage, with surviving sections varying in form and condition.
Alucra and Çamoluk add valleys, villages, pasture and farmland to inland Giresun's geography. Terrain, settlement distribution and vegetation differ from the coast. Town history and monuments meet rural life, showing how the province's identity embraces sea, mountains and interior together.
Check sites and routes before visiting, particularly in rain, fog and upland conditions. Season and maintenance can affect access to buildings and facilities. Respect homes and villages, follow open paths and protect monuments and their surroundings.
