Boyabat Castle on its rock overlooking the town.
Sinop Province extends beyond the peninsula of its capital into coastal and inland districts. Ayancık, Erfelek, Boyabat and Gerze reveal this variety. Ayancık and the western forests connect the sea with the mountains; Erfelek has valleys and waterfalls; inland Boyabat is watched over by its castle. Gerze brings together coast, villages and uplands. Together, they show a province of heritage, water, forest and agriculture, with clear differences in location, climate and terrain.
Ayancık lies on Sinop's western coast, bounded by the sea to the north and rising towards forests and uplands in the south. Valleys and villages shape its geography, with tree cover fundamental to the character of its interior. This relationship between shore and forest differs from both the Boyabat plain and the peninsula of Sinop city.
Akgöl lies south of Ayancık amid dense woodland. It is a pond created where two streams meet. Calm water sits alongside trees and slopes, and the area became a nature park in 2018. Reflections and changing woodland colours define the scene, while the surrounding land provides plant and animal habitats. Akgöl gives the forested interior a water feature distinct from the coastal lakes near the sea.
Tatlıca Waterfalls are near the village of the same name in Erfelek district. A succession of 28 waterfalls of different sizes occupies a single valley. Water flows through successive steps and sections amid beech woods, bringing trees, rock and river together.
The site's character comes from this close sequence of waterfalls in a narrow valley, where water moves between adjacent levels and forms different pools and channels. Flow changes with rainfall and season, while light varies between open stretches and shaded woodland. Nearby villages and valleys complete Erfelek's rural identity, with water shaping both the land and local life. Protecting the channel and forest is essential to preserving the site.
One of the successive Tatlıca Waterfalls in Erfelek.
Boyabat lies inland in the Gökırmak valley. Its castle stands on one of two facing rocky heights, with construction following the shape of the rock. Round and rectangular towers punctuate the walls, alongside internal passages and steps. The position shows how a natural height was used to oversee the valley and protect the town, combining terrain and fortifications in one scene.
Evidence of use reaches back to antiquity, while the standing castle displays Ottoman features alongside earlier foundations and sections. It offers layers of building and repair rather than one definitive construction date for every element. The town also preserves traditional houses and an urban fabric shaped by its role as an inland centre. Surrounding farmland completes Boyabat's connection with the valley and communities settled along it.
Gerze lies east of Sinop city, where the sea meets the town and the green slopes rising behind it. Harbours and waterfront reveal local life, while villages and uplands extend the picture into a wider countryside. Yelkentepe in the Hacıselli area is one recognised viewpoint, opening onto the coast and showing the town's relationship to surrounding hills.
Inland, Saklıköy Waterfalls follow a wooded watercourse, adding water and vegetation to the local variety. Villages host traditional and seasonal gatherings, including Hıdırellez celebrations associated with spring. Gerze thus brings together maritime life, social heritage and countryside. Alongside Ayancık, Erfelek and Boyabat, it completes a picture that changes from coast to forest and from waterfall to castle and agricultural valley.
Check road and path conditions: rainfall affects valleys and waterfalls, and sections may close. Castle steps and forest paths require care and suitable footwear; stay on approved routes. Respect the privacy of homes and villages, and do not enter private land or sensitive habitats for photographs.
