Bitlis lies in Eastern Anatolia, south-west of Lake Van, among steep valleys and mountain slopes. Its historic urban fabric includes important Ottoman-period buildings alongside monuments from earlier eras. The city's history reaches back into antiquity.
Bitlis Castle dominates a rocky outcrop above the city. Its origins are uncertain, and the structure reflects a long history rather than a securely established single Byzantine foundation. Other important monuments include Şerefiye Mosque, İhlasiye Medrese and historic bathhouses in the older neighbourhoods. Together they reveal the city's architectural development across different periods.
Mountain scenery and wooded areas in the wider province offer possibilities for outdoor excursions. Heavy winter snowfall gives the city a very different seasonal character. Honey, yoghurt and local cheeses connect its markets and kitchens with surrounding rural communities.
- Spring and summer are generally convenient for exploring the greener landscapes and historic streets.
- Appreciate the castle and city views in the late-afternoon light, checking which approaches and areas are open rather than assuming unrestricted access.
- Try regional dishes, village-style tandır bread and local honey.
