Erzincan lies in northern Eastern Anatolia, in a broad mountain-framed landscape of rivers and agricultural countryside. It is an important link between eastern and western Türkiye and a rewarding base for exploring the wider province.
The Kemaliye area is known for dramatic valley scenery, especially the deep Karanlık Canyon, historic routes and challenging mountain terrain. Girlevik Waterfall is another prominent natural attraction. In freezing winter conditions, ice formations can create a very different scene from the flowing cascades of the warmer months.
The wider province preserves traces of Seljuk-era and Ottoman history, including historic religious buildings and traditional stone houses. Copperwork and decorative woodwork contribute to its craft traditions. The distribution of monuments across several districts makes the province's heritage broader than the modern city centre alone.
- Spring and summer are generally convenient for green landscapes and outdoor excursions, with weather varying by elevation.
- Visit Girlevik in the morning to enjoy the changing light, mountain surroundings and spray from the falls.
- Look for locally produced honey and butter in markets or established village outlets.
