Kars lies in north-eastern Türkiye, within a province bordering Armenia. Its historic castle, varied architectural heritage and snowy winter streets make it a distinctive Eastern Anatolian destination.
Armenian, Byzantine and Ottoman periods all form part of the region's history. Kars Castle has a medieval history associated with the twelfth century, alongside later rebuilding. Beyond the city, Ani is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its evocative nickname, the “city of a thousand and one churches”, recalls its medieval religious heritage rather than a literal count of surviving buildings.
Kars experiences severe winter cold, when snow transforms its streets and surrounding plains. The area is also known for Kars cheeses and honey, with food production closely connected to its rural hinterland.
- December to March suits travellers seeking winter scenery, subject to snow and road conditions. Check castle access and prepare for the cold.
- The Doğu Ekspresi (Eastern Express) links Ankara and Kars through a changing inland landscape. Check current timetables, tickets and the distinction between ordinary and tourist services.
- Try local meat dishes and regional cheeses. Ask producers about the style and ageing rather than assuming smoked cheese is the area's defining speciality.
