Bingöl lies among the mountains of Eastern Türkiye. Its name means “a thousand lakes”, recalling the many small upland waters and springs in the wider landscape, rather than a precise modern count. Green mountain scenery and quieter rural settings are central to its appeal.
Uplands and wooded areas surround the city. Officially documented mountain lakes include Gölbahri and Kerkis, among many other highland waters. Spring flowers bring colour to the pastures, while winter snow transforms the higher slopes. Birdlife and other wildlife add interest to the province's water and mountain habitats.
Bingöl maintains strong rural traditions and a culture of hospitality. Local food, crafts and community events offer an introduction to its Anatolian identity beyond the main tourist circuits. Mountain sports and traditional horse races form part of local programmes, including the horse-racing tradition in Toklular, Karlıova. Check current announcements rather than assuming a fixed annual calendar.
- May to September is generally convenient for outdoor visits, with higher routes opening later as snow recedes.
- Nearby uplands offer broad mountain views and opportunities for sunset photography; plan the return journey before darkness.
- Try local yoghurt and honey, asking about the producer and origin.
