Van lies in Eastern Türkiye beside Lake Van (Van Gölü), a large saline and alkaline lake. The city's striking surroundings are matched by a history reaching back more than 3,000 years to the Urartian civilisation.
The lake's blue and turquoise waters are the area's defining feature. Akdamar Island contains the Church of the Holy Cross, an outstanding tenth-century monument. High mountains around the lake create changing contrasts between water, rock and snow.
Van is associated with the distinctive white Van cat. Some have differently coloured eyes, although this is not true of every cat. Another celebrated tradition is Van breakfast (Van kahvaltısı), a generous selection of local produce and dishes. Hospitality remains an important part of the city's cultural identity.
- May to October generally offers convenient conditions for lake visits, with temperatures varying across the season.
- Take a boat to Akdamar Island and visit its historic church, confirming departures and access in advance.
- Try a traditional Van breakfast in the morning, perhaps at a lakeside venue with views of the water.
