Tirebolu Castle on its rocky projection into the sea.
Tirebolu and Görele are towns on the Black Sea coast of eastern Giresun. Maritime landmarks, agriculture and musical heritage meet here, with Tirebolu Castle, tea and the kemençe as elements of local identity.
The castle, also known as Saint Jean, stands on a rocky projection into the sea near the town centre. Its position explains its coastal character and the importance of overseeing the surroundings. Surviving stonework occupies a setting of water and rock, distinct from inland castles above valleys or mountains.
Tirebolu is associated with tea grown in this part of Giresun, while hazelnuts also shape the province's agricultural environment. Cultivated slopes rise behind the coast, revealing connections between humid climate and local work. Agricultural products feature in markets, hospitality and daily life, giving the greenery an economic meaning.
Traditional instruments displayed in Görele's Kemençe Museum.
Görele is known for the kemençe, a bowed string instrument, and its musical heritage. The Kemençe Museum presents part of this memory. The instrument features in Black Sea music and local dances; its making and playing carry knowledge between generations. This heritage adds a cultural understanding to the area's natural and architectural attractions.
Coastal centres and hillside villages bring together trade, farming and fishing. Streets, homes, harbours and waterfronts show the connection between people and sea, with fields behind. These complete the picture of Tirebolu and Görele as towns with monuments and continuing local life.
Check sites and paths before visiting, particularly during rain, fog and upland conditions. Season and maintenance can affect facilities and access. Respect homes and villages, follow open routes and protect monuments and the surrounding environment.
