Residence After Graduation in Türkiye: Options and Documents
Studies ending creates a different task from renewing student residence: establish what happened and when, understand its effect on current status, then choose a residence basis whose conditions you meet or arrange departure. A printed card remaining valid for several more months is not enough. The graduate-category application window does not mean you can wait throughout it without a lawful basis to stay. Reviewed on 26 October 2026, this guide brings together the steps for a graduate of higher education in Türkiye and for someone who withdrew, interrupted study or had an enrolment change, distinguishing those circumstances.

Start with the event: did you graduate, or did enrolment end for another reason?
Graduation means completing higher education and the university confirming that status with a specific date. Withdrawal, dismissal, interrupted studies or frozen enrolment is not automatically graduation, even if you studied for years or have only one course remaining. Likewise, graduating from a university outside Türkiye does not by itself satisfy the category for graduates of higher education in Türkiye.
Obtain a document from the registrar or responsible university office establishing your status and its date. Ask for the graduation date recorded by the university, not the ceremony or collection date of the decorative paper diploma. If university, e-Devlet or other records differ, request a documented clarification and correction. Do not select the later date because it gives you more time.
| Event | What to establish | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Completing higher education in Türkiye | Graduation evidence and its official date | Student residence continuing until the card’s printed expiry |
| Withdrawal or dismissal | Decision or status document and effective date | Graduate-category eligibility merely because you previously studied |
| Frozen enrolment or interrupted study | Actual university status, return-to-study conditions and decision date | Automatic continuation or cancellation operating identically in every case |
| Admission to new studies | Admission alone or actual eligible enrolment, and the relevant dates | Admission extending current status or covering the gap between programmes |
| Graduation ceremony or delayed diploma | University-confirmed graduation and an available official alternative document | The ceremony or diploma printing always starting the deadlines |
Distinguish 10 days, six months and one year
Official university guidance for graduation before card expiry explains that student residence ends on the graduation date and that the student must apply for permission appropriate to the new purpose within 10 days of that date. Treat confirmation of graduation as an event requiring prompt action. Do not wait for the old card’s expiry or the university ceremony.
Six months is the application window for the category covering people who completed higher education in Türkiye, not independent permission to remain for six months after graduation. One year is the maximum grant under that once-only category, not a guaranteed duration or a right to renew year after year.
Consider both questions from the start: am I eligible for the graduate category, and on what basis do I lawfully stay and apply now? Being within the category’s window does not itself remedy a breach or previous cancellation, or make a card whose purpose ended usable as continuing residence without a procedure.
| Period | Its function | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| 10 days from graduation | Timing for requesting the new stay purpose under the graduation guidance described | A general grace period for every cancellation, withdrawal or legal status |
| Six months from graduation | Eligibility window for graduate short-term residence after higher education in Türkiye | Six months of unrestricted stay after student status ends |
| Once only, for a maximum of one year | Grant limit for the graduate category | A guaranteed year or an automatically renewable job-search permit |
| Old card’s expiry date | Information read alongside purpose, event and decision | Sufficient proof of continued student residence after graduation |
Do not generalise graduation timing to frozen enrolment or withdrawal without examining the status document and its effect with the university and Migration Management. A residence purpose ending differs from another reason arising while the original purpose continues.
Decision map: eligible stay, new studies or departure?
Choose the route matching your circumstances and documents, not the easiest label on the application screen. The graduate category may suit someone who completed higher education in Türkiye. You may instead have a family basis, new studies, work permission or another independently valid status. Not every graduate must first obtain short-term residence, and a job promise or rental agreement alone does not authorise stay.
If you hold independent residence permission or an ordinary valid work permit, examine how study ending affects that basis itself instead of assuming every status ends together. Conversely, a student card is not a basis independent of the studies that ended. If no clear eligibility to remain exists, discuss departure arrangements and the consequences of your status early with the competent authority.
| Your next situation | What determines the route | First practical action |
|---|---|---|
| Graduate of higher education in Türkiye | Confirmed graduation, six-month window and short-term conditions | Prepare graduation evidence and examine the new-purpose application promptly |
| New eligible studies | Actual enrolment, student conditions and the gap between programmes | Confirm dates and documents with the university and Migration Management |
| Family meeting family-residence conditions | Family and sponsor status, relationship documents and other conditions | Check eligibility and the checklist rather than relying solely on marriage or kinship |
| Employment or a job opportunity | Work-permit procedure and domestic or overseas application conditions | Start the relevant route with the employer before actually working |
| Another lawful short-term purpose | Genuine purpose supported by its documents and category conditions | Select the correct category and checklist without importing the graduate file |
| No suitable basis or a negative decision | Actual lawful status, decision and notification | Review the procedure or departure without assuming a universal deadline or exemption |
Who can use graduate residence, and what are its limits?
This short-term category covers someone who completed higher education in Türkiye and applies within six months of graduation. Graduation status must be established, alongside the general short-term conditions and information and documents justifying the request. Being a former student or holding a qualification from any country is insufficient.
The category is granted once only, for a maximum of one year. Do not build your residence plan around renewing under the same purpose each year or assume completing another programme automatically creates a new opportunity. If you used it before, present its history and documents to the competent authority before opening an application based on repeating it.
The new residence permit is not work authorisation or a job promise and does not guarantee a later transfer. Review what you will do after it ends well before expiry. Every subsequent request needs its own appropriate basis, conditions and procedure.
A delayed diploma: alternative graduation evidence and application timing
The graduate-category checklist accepts a copy of the diploma, a temporary graduation certificate or a document obtained through e-Devlet, with the original available at the appointment as instructed. These are evidence alternatives, not a requirement to collect all three. Do not wait for the ceremony or diploma printing if an alternative official graduation document is available.
Request a document clearly showing the correct name, programme, graduation status and date. If the e-Devlet document is missing or incorrect, contact the responsible university office for an alternative and correction, keeping correspondence. An unclear screenshot or an old admission letter is not an alternative whose acceptance can be assumed.
University delay does not automatically extend a procedural deadline or lawful stay. If evidence cannot be obtained in time, contact Migration Management immediately about your status, accepted evidence and how to submit it, retaining the reply and reference. Do not enter an incorrect date or treat an incomplete application alone as a final solution.
The graduate short-term file: basics and purpose-specific evidence
Start with the checklist generated for your current circumstances, then use this table to organise the file. Initial, transfer and extension applications, applicant status and age, and accommodation can change particular requirements. Migration Management may request additional information or documents; an organising checklist does not override an official request for more material.
Complete your personal details and your own contact channels. Review name, passport number, birth date and graduation date before finishing. Prepare the required originals and copies. Do not automatically order translation or authentication for every paper where the document instructions and circumstances do not require it.
| Item | What to prepare | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Application form | Completed, printed form signed according to legal capacity and instructions | Application type, purpose, reference and contact details |
| Passport and entry status | Required passport, visa and entry-page copies, with the original | The general rule is passport validity for 60 days beyond the requested residence period, subject to applicable exceptions, with matching details and current-status documents |
| Photographs | Two biometric photographs taken within the last six months under the checklist | Specifications and the digital photograph required by the system |
| Graduation evidence | Copy of diploma, temporary certificate or e-Devlet document, with the original for the appointment | Graduation from higher education in Türkiye and the official date |
| Financial resources | Declaration and resource documents according to the form and authority’s requests | Do not invent a universal salary threshold for this category |
| Health and cover | Accepted health insurance for the intended period or an exemption that actually applies | Validity after studies end and conditions for acceptance |
| Accommodation and address | Appropriate housing evidence and address registration where required | Actual residence and consistent records and documents |
| Payment | Receipts for official amounts actually due in your case | Separate harç, the document charge and any other applicable item |
| UETS and conditional items | UETS document for transfer or extension under the checklist, with the under-18 exception | Do not generalise to every initial application or minor; follow the case checklist |
| Additional requests | Criminal record or other documents if requested by the authority | Form, authentication and period specified in the actual request |
Accommodation and address after leaving university housing
Your entitlement to university housing may end or your contract change after graduation, but timing depends on the housing provider and actual arrangement. There is no assumed common date for every university. Prepare evidence of where you will actually live during the new application. Do not use a room you have left merely because the record has not yet changed.
Housing documents are alternatives reflecting reality: ownership, renting, a hotel, a dormitory or a host, each with evidence accepted by the authority. Do not collect every alternative or treat a temporary booking or hosting promise as guaranteed acceptable evidence. Check the document and authentication needed for your arrangement before paying unnecessary costs.
Transfer and extension applications require address registration under the checklist. An initial application requires address registration within 20 working days after residence approval. This deadline belongs to its stage; it does not postpone accommodation evidence or address details needed when applying. If moving between cities, establish the competent authority and update procedure rather than only changing text in the form.
Insurance after studies end: verify validity before buying an alternative
Request evidence of your actual cover and its duration from SGK, the insurer or scholarship provider according to the insurance basis. Do not assume every policy ends immediately at graduation or automatically continues until card expiry or academic-year end. Status, coverage conditions and assessments differ.
Check that cover submitted is accepted for the new residence purpose and requested period. An insurance number, old card or previous deduction alone does not prove current healthcare entitlement or acceptance of the document in the new file. Keep recent evidence and clarify any difference between graduation and cover-expiry dates.
Do not automatically buy another policy if accepted cover remains in force, or leave a gap by assuming student insurance continues. Discuss premiums, refunds or existing obligations with the body assessing them. Changing residence does not erase amounts or guarantee repayment. Insurance rules during study do not automatically transfer to a graduate.
Fees and budget: distinguish them from the student exemption
Budget according to the new application type, nationality, duration and applicable exemption. The student residence-fee exemption during study does not by itself establish exemption under the graduate category afterward. A harç exemption also does not exempt the document charge, translation or insurance.
Do not use a fixed total published for another case or consider earlier student payments an automatically transferable credit. Obtain the official payment assessment and reference, check applicant name, item and amount, and keep the receipt. If payment has not appeared, establish transaction status before paying again.
| Item | How to verify it | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Residence-permit fee: harç | Assessment by nationality, duration, category and applicable exemption | Continuation of the student exemption merely because you recently graduated |
| Residence-document charge | The 2026 document charge alone is TRY 964, separate from harç; check the year and official assessment rather than carrying this amount into 2027 | That it is part of harç or automatically covered by its exemption |
| Entry item or another official charge | Whether it applies to your status and its payment reference | That every graduate pays it or is exempt |
| Insurance and services | An itemised quotation for required cover, translation, certification and photographs | One price or a need to buy every service on an office’s list |
| Previous payments | The collecting body’s rules and receipts | Automatic refund, offset or transfer for unused time |
Application steps: from checking with the university to submitting the migration file
Use the e-İkamet application appropriate to your status and new purpose, following its authority, appointment and document-submission instructions. The graduate short-term route is not the student-file route during study. Do not assume delivering papers to the university office completes the short-term application or replaces the procedure specified by Migration Management.
- Confirm graduation or enrolment-ending status and its date, and obtain its official document or accepted alternative.
- Collect the student card, passport and evidence of any existing independent status. Check the actual basis for stay without relying solely on the printed date.
- Choose an eligible next purpose: graduate category, new studies, family residence, a separate work route or another reason. Identify the procedure if departure is preferable or required.
- Check procedural timing immediately. Distinguish the graduation-related 10 days from the category’s six-month window; do not wait for card expiry or the ceremony.
- Complete the appropriate official application, checking details, purpose, address, cover and graduation date. Save the form and application reference.
- Prepare purpose-specific evidence, basics, originals and copies, address registration and UETS where required, paying only officially assessed amounts.
- Submit to the authority, through the method and at the time specified in application instructions, keeping delivery evidence. Do not transfer the student university-handover process to graduate short-term residence.
- Monitor missing-item requests and correspondence, submit supplements through the required channel, and keep every document and notification date.
- After the decision, check permit category, start and end dates, card details and address obligations. Plan before the new purpose or permission ends.
Creating a form or booking an appointment does not guarantee approval or by itself cover every journey or overdue situation. Establish the approved application document and its effect in your case with the authority. Do not treat an office receipt or general message as permission to stay.
Interrupted studies or lost enrolment: do not use a graduate file by mistake
If you withdrew, were dismissed, froze enrolment or stopped attending, identify the status the university actually records. Academic status may differ from simply missing a lecture or registering late. Obtain evidence of the decision, date and possibility of continuing study, then discuss its student-residence effect with Migration Management.
Student permission depends on meeting its conditions, being able to continue education and using it for its purpose. Conditions ending or evidence of inability to continue studying may be relevant to refusal, cancellation or non-extension. Do not treat every freeze as identical immediate cancellation or promise the card alone is sufficient without verification.
Someone who has not completed higher education should not assume graduate eligibility because completion was near or a transcript exists. Examine another genuine residence reason or departure arrangements. If the purpose has demonstrably ceased, do not wait for card expiry to ask about its effect or turn graduation timing into a general grace period for your case.
New studies, family or work: prepare the correct route’s file
New studies need eligible enrolment, documents and procedure. Admission to a master’s programme beginning later does not by itself cover the interval between bachelor’s completion and the new enrolment. Record graduation, admission, actual enrolment and programme-start dates. Ask which status and procedure cover the gap; do not assume automatic student extension or renewal.
Family residence needs an eligible relationship and sponsor, relationship documents, accommodation, income, cover and other requirements. Marriage or a parent being in Türkiye is not a grant decision. If you hold independently valid family residence with student rights, examine its status and conditions rather than assuming every basis ends with study.
Employment is a separate Ministry of Labour route and may require a domestic or overseas procedure according to eligibility. The saved in-country rule concerns residence permission issued for at least six months and still valid when applying, not six months elapsed or remaining. A tourist label alone does not establish eligibility. Do not regard a student card whose purpose ended as meeting conditions merely because of its printed date.
A job offer, signed contract or graduate residence does not permit starting work without the applicable authorisation. An ordinary valid work permit serves as residence permission while valid, with different provisions for temporary-protection permits, international-protection applicants and conditional refugees. Do not turn those exceptions or work ending into general graduate stay periods.
The effect on family and everyday records
Each person has their own residence basis and documents. Your studies ending does not automatically give family members graduate residence or end every independent permit they hold. Record each person’s permit type, start/end dates and relationship to you or the sponsor. Request assessment of any sponsor, cover or accommodation change affecting the dependent file.
Arrange dormitory departure or a housing change under its conditions, update your address when it changes and keep a contact channel working after leaving university. Access to university email or services may end after enrolment according to institutional arrangements. Keep important correspondence and documents in a file accessible without relying solely on the university account.
Do not publish your passport, identity number or family documents to seek general advice. Provide documents to the university or Migration Management through required channels. In public enquiries, describe the stage, event and province without sensitive personal details.
Following the file, missing documents, decision and refusal
Keep the application number, form, submission evidence, receipts and attachments. Monitor the telephone, email and channels specified for you, reading each missing-item request completely: document, receiving authority, date and deadline. Sending a paper somewhere other than the specified authority is not confirmed completion.
Respond within the notified period and keep submission evidence. If a document cannot be obtained, tell the authority before the deadline and ask about the available procedure. Do not assume an extension because a university or another body was late, or build travel or a contract around a guaranteed issue date.
On decision, check its text, notification, permit details and duration. Unused student-permit time is not automatically added to the new grant, and not every residence period starts when the card is issued or collected. If something differs, refer to the decision and authority rather than amending the calculation yourself.
If an application is refused or residence cancelled, a refused application is not valid residence to transfer as though nothing happened. Read the reasons, notification date, effects and applicable objection, court-action and departure procedures. A new application or challenge does not automatically authorise stay or suspend every effect. Obtain case-specific legal help for a dispute or overdue situation.
Travel and departure: arrange them before booking
Before travel, establish your status on departure and return: do you hold independently valid permission, or a pending application and approved application document? Is a visa or exemption needed for entry, and for how long? Do not rely on a student card whose purpose ended or an ordinary form copy alone.
An approved residence application document with fee documents and its conditions may allow departure and return within 15 days on each trip. This depends on approved documentation and a qualifying case; it is not a promise for everyone who opened a form or left after refusal. Check the accepted document, effect of exceeding 15 days and entry conditions before travelling instead of reducing the procedure to booking a return ticket.
If choosing departure or lacking an appropriate stay basis, establish timing and procedure according to status and notified decisions. Leaving does not guarantee erasing a breach or exemption from fees, penalties or an entry ban. The graduate window also does not guarantee return or acceptance of a later application from anywhere.
Keep graduation documents, decisions, receipts and departure evidence when issued, maintaining access to the contact channel used in the application. Do not leave a pending file without knowing how to follow it or how departure affects it. Do not use another person to change details or submit information inconsistent with your circumstances.
Two practical examples: what if the dates do not match?
Example one: a university records a student’s graduation on 1 June, while the ceremony is on 20 July and the card shows the end of December. She does not wait for the ceremony or December. She promptly requests a temporary graduation certificate or available e-Devlet document and examines the new stay purpose and procedure within the graduation timing described. She assembles cover, address evidence and the application checklist. If university evidence is delayed, she contacts Migration Management early and keeps the reference rather than assuming the six-month window permits waiting inside Türkiye.
Example two: a student stops the programme before completing it, then receives admission to a master’s beginning months later and a job offer. He starts with a document establishing withdrawal or frozen enrolment and its effective date. He does not claim to be a graduate on a transcript alone. He examines the new enrolment, gap and current status, discusses work authorisation and application eligibility with the employer, and the stay purpose or departure with Migration Management. Admission and a job offer do not automatically create residence or work rights.
The examples organise decisions and documents. They calculate neither an individual entitlement nor a last departure day and do not guarantee acceptance. Outcomes depend on the document, lawful status, authority and decision.
| Tracking record | What to enter | Evidence to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Event | Its type and effective date established by the university | Graduation certificate or enrolment decision and correction correspondence |
| Existing status | Permit type and dates and any decision affecting its purpose | Card, decision and evidence of independent status if any |
| Next option | Purpose, eligibility, route and authority | Application checklist, purpose evidence and case-specific replies |
| Application and submission | Reference, authority, appointment and delivery date | Form, receipts and acknowledgement |
| Follow-up | Missing items, deadline, reply, decision and notification | Authority’s messages, submitted document and submission proof |
| Travel or departure | Approved document, conditions and actual plan | Exit/return documents or the applicable decision |
Final checklist before applying or leaving
Make sure you can answer five questions with documents: what happened and when? What is my current stay basis? Which next purpose do I qualify for? Which document, procedure, authority and deadline apply? How do I follow the decision or leave according to my status? If an answer rests on the ceremony, an intermediary’s words or the card date alone, complete verification promptly.
For the graduate file, review graduation evidence, the short-term checklist, cover, accommodation, address, payment and items conditional on application type. For a non-graduate, begin with the actual status and correct route. Keep accessible copies and contact details, then plan beyond the next permit instead of postponing the decision until it ends.
Frequently asked questions
My card remains valid after graduation. Can I use it until expiry?
Do not rely on the printed date alone. Official graduation guidance explains student residence ending on graduation and applying for a new purpose within 10 days. Promptly check any independently valid basis and the appropriate procedure.
Can I stay six months after graduation without applying?
Six months is the graduate category’s eligibility window, not independent permission to stay. Lawful status and new-purpose application timing must be arranged together.
Will I receive a full year and renew it afterward?
The graduate category is granted once only, for up to one year, subject to assessment and conditions. There is no guaranteed year or repeated renewal under the same category.
Which graduation date counts: the ceremony or diploma collection?
Start with the official date recorded by the university and graduation document. Do not assume the ceremony or paper collection is the legal date. Resolve record differences early.
The diploma has not been issued. Should I wait?
The checklist accepts alternatives: diploma, temporary graduation certificate or e-Devlet document, with the original as instructed. Request the alternative promptly. Delayed paper does not extend deadlines or stay.
Must I collect the diploma, temporary certificate and e-Devlet document together?
They are alternatives for proving graduation, not three combined requirements. Follow your checklist, bring the required original to the appointment and provide any requested supplement.
I graduated outside Türkiye. Is this category for me?
The condition is completing higher education in Türkiye. A foreign qualification alone does not establish that condition. Examine another appropriate purpose if available.
I withdrew or froze enrolment. Am I a graduate?
No. Obtain status evidence and its effective date, and examine its effect on student residence and the next route. Do not transfer the graduate window or timing to every interruption without checking.
I have master’s admission. Does it cover the waiting period?
Admission does not automatically cover the gap. Check eligible enrolment, programme dates, current status and procedure with the university and Migration Management before relying on it.
Do I submit the graduate short-term file to the university like the student file?
Follow the authority, method and appointment in the short-term form. Do not transfer university student-file delivery to a graduate or treat university delivery as replacing the required migration procedure.
Does graduate residence allow work, or is a job offer enough?
No. Employment needs applicable authorisation through its separate route. An offer or contract does not allow starting work or independently extend stay.
Must six months remain for an in-country work application?
The stated rule concerns residence permission issued for at least six months and still valid when applying, not six months remaining or elapsed. Category eligibility, actual status and procedure still need checking; tourist residence alone does not establish them.
Does SGK end immediately or continue automatically after graduation?
Neither outcome is assumed for everyone. Request confirmation of the coverage basis, validity, duration and obligations from SGK, the insurer or scholarship provider, then establish its acceptance for the new period.
Does the student fee exemption continue for a graduate?
Do not automatically transfer it to the new purpose. The assessment depends on category, nationality, duration and applicable exemption, distinguishing harç, document charge, insurance and services.
Do I need address registration and UETS?
The transfer/extension checklist requires address registration and UETS according to circumstances, with the under-18 UETS exception. An initial application has address registration within 20 working days after approval. Do not impose every item on every stage.
Do family members automatically receive the same residence permission?
No. Each has their own basis and documents. Sponsor, cover or accommodation changes may need separate assessment. A family member’s independent residence does not automatically end merely because your studies end.
I missed the procedural timing. Is being within six months enough?
No. The category window does not automatically resolve stay status or a breach. Consult the authority promptly with the facts, documents and decisions. A new application is not guaranteed regularisation.
Can I travel while the application is processed?
Check the approved application document, status and entry conditions before booking. The 15-day return procedure depends on the document, fees and applicable conditions, not automatically every form or refused case.
Does an objection or new application suspend a refusal’s effects?
Do not assume so. Read the decision, notification and applicable objection, court-action and departure procedure. Seek legal help where needed. Refusal is not valid residence to transfer.
If I leave, is the breach erased and return guaranteed?
Leaving does not guarantee erasing a breach or exemption from penalties or an entry ban. The graduate window guarantees neither later acceptance nor return. Establish the procedure according to your status and decisions.
Will unused student-permit time be added to the new permit?
Time and payments do not transfer automatically. Check the decision and validity dates. Not every new period begins on card issuance or collection.
I used graduate residence, then completed another programme. Do I get another opportunity?
Do not assume another programme renews access to a once-only category. Present the previous history and documents to the competent authority and examine another suitable basis where needed.
