Once you enrol in higher education in Türkiye, arrange your lawful stay alongside your academic registration. A university acceptance or student certificate does not by itself replace a residence permit. Start with your university's international office and the official e-Residence system, then follow the instructions for your own application.

Who can apply?

The student residence route covers eligible foreign students in recognised higher-education programmes, including associate, bachelor's, master's and doctoral study. Different conditions apply to other education levels. A private language course is not automatically eligible for this same permit category.
If you already hold another valid status, ask which procedure applies before opening a new application.

Apply before your lawful stay expires

For an initial application, act within your visa or visa-exemption period. There is no universal 90-day allowance for every nationality or entry. Use the authorised period that applies to you.
Renewal applications can be lodged within the final 60 days of the current permit and must be made before it expires. Save the completed application and follow the university or migration office's document-delivery instructions promptly.

Prepare the documents

Your generated application form and current official checklist determine the exact requirements. Common items include:
  • The completed, signed residence application form.
  • Passport identity, validity and entry information, with originals and required copies.
  • Recent biometric photographs in the specified format.
  • A current student certificate showing your actual registration.
  • Acceptable evidence of your address, such as the appropriate dormitory document or housing documentation.
  • Evidence of qualifying health cover or an applicable documented exemption.
  • Receipts for the official amounts due in your case.
An offer letter alone may not establish current enrolment. Do not order translations, notarisation or extra documents simply because a general checklist lists them: follow the instructions issued for your application.

Health cover: check the SGK deadline early

Foreign students may request general health insurance through SGK within three months of first enrolment, under the applicable rules. Do not assume you can buy a private policy now and switch to this student route at any later date. Ask SGK and the international office promptly about eligibility, premiums and the evidence needed.
Where that route is not used or an exemption does not apply, obtain private cover meeting residence requirements for the requested period. A travel-insurance label alone does not establish that a policy qualifies.

A practical application sequence

  1. Check your lawful-stay deadline and ask the university about its student residence procedure.
  2. Complete the relevant application at official e-Residence, using accurate passport, university and address information.
  3. Save and sign the generated form and prepare its document checklist.
  4. Pay only the official amount assessed for your application and keep the receipt.
  5. Deliver the file through the instructed university or migration-office channel and attend any appointment requested.
  6. Track the application and respond to requests for missing information within the stated deadline.
Do not assume every applicant uploads the whole file or independently chooses an interview appointment; the applicable student workflow may use university document collection.

Temporary accommodation and address changes

Use an address you can substantiate with the accepted documents. A temporary stay does not automatically satisfy every address requirement. Ask what evidence is accepted and update your registration when circumstances change.
Changing university or province can require additional migration steps. Confirm the procedure before moving, rather than assuming an address update alone is enough.

Processing and permit length

The authority assesses the application and determines its validity period. The permit is not universally restricted to one year; study duration and the applicable conditions matter. If further documents are requested, supply them through the instructed channel. Keep copies and avoid making fixed travel plans on an assumed processing date.

Can students work?

A student residence permit is not general permission to work. Work authorisation is separate. For associate and undergraduate students, the right to work under a work permit begins after the first year; different provisions apply to postgraduate study and specific exemptions. Check the applicable authorisation before starting a job or placement.

Final checks

Make sure your university record, passport details, address and insurance evidence agree. Keep your application, receipts and correspondence together, and contact the international office early if a document is delayed.
