Location
Konya lies in Central Anatolia. Its identity is closely connected to Seljuk history and Mevlâna Jalal al-Din Rumi. A visit combines museums, historic mosques and bazaars, with the option of adding Sille or nearby archaeological sites. For a first visit, begin in the centre, then give out-of-town destinations their own time so each stop can be enjoyed at a comfortable pace.
Mevlâna Museum: An Introduction to Konya
The Mevlâna Museum is in Karatay, within the historic Mevlevi lodge complex. It contains Rumi's tomb beneath the green dome that has become the city's most recognisable symbol.Displays include manuscripts, musical instruments and objects associated with Rumi and the Mevlevi order. The dervish rooms, courtyard and other parts of the complex explain life within the institution, alongside its architectural value.
Alaaddin and Seljuk Architecture
Alaaddin Hill and Alaaddin Mosque are major central stops, with Seljuk palace remains on the hill. Combine them with Karatay and İnce Minare madrasas for other aspects of the city's architecture.Choose two or three stops according to your interests, leaving time to walk and rest between visits.
Sille and Meram
Sille offers a different atmosphere with historic houses, lanes and Aya Elenia Church. Allow a suggested half-day for walking, photographs and a meal.Meram is known for orchards and recreation areas, making an addition when you want a quieter interval beyond museum visits.
Arriving and Getting Around
Konya has high-speed train connections towards Ankara, İstanbul and Karaman. Check available services, arrival times and the station name when booking, and arrange onward travel to your accommodation.Konya Airport is approximately 18 km from the centre. Its operator lists HAVAŞ buses, taxis and car hire among transfer options.
Within the city, use the official ATUS service for bus and tram routes and times. A September 2026 update extended the Alaaddin line to City Hospital, Şehir Hastanesi. Plan using the current route.
Accommodation and Daily Life
For a short visit, start by looking near the places you will see, particularly Mevlâna and the Alaaddin area. Compare actual walking distances and transport links. For longer stays, prioritise nearby shops, services and a transport stop. If driving, check parking and how easily you can enter and leave the accommodation.
What to Eat
Konya's best-known dishes include Etliekmek, thin bread topped with meat, and Fırın Kebabı, an oven-cooked kebab. Fit one into a central walk, checking portion size and price before ordering.
A Suggested First Visit
- Day one: Mevlâna Museum, a central walk, then Alaaddin Hill and a nearby Seljuk monument.
- Day two: Sille, followed by a park visit or more museums according to your interests.
- An extra day: give it to Çatalhöyük if you want to extend the archaeological side of the trip.
Before Setting Out
Check museum opening times and closing days before visiting. If you want to attend Mevlevi sema, confirm the event, location and time while planning. Group nearby places on one outing to reduce travel time.
