Location
Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı lie south of Nevşehir on the road towards Niğde. They are among Cappadocia's principal sites for understanding how rooms, storerooms and passageways were carved into rock for shelter and underground life.
Derinkuyu Underground City
Derinkuyu is notable for its depth and multiple levels. It contains storerooms, stables, a church, a hall known as a religious school, wells and ventilation shafts.Official descriptions give an overall depth of approximately 85 metres. The visitor route covers only permitted areas and does not imply access to that entire depth. Large stone doors show how passages could be sealed to protect people inside.
Kaymaklı Underground City
Kaymaklı has a network of rooms and halls connected by narrow corridors, with kitchens, stores, wells, ventilation shafts and large stones for closing entrances. The official museum portal describes four illuminated levels open to visitors. The arrangement of spaces reveals how provisions were stored and the needs of those sheltering inside were met.
Which Should You Choose?
What the Visit Involves
Passages vary in height and width. Some require stooping, and Derinkuyu has tunnels wide enough for only one person. Move slowly when groups are crowded together. If stairs, stooping or confined spaces are difficult for you, ask staff about the route before buying a ticket. Fewer visitor levels do not automatically make Kaymaklı easy.
Getting There and Getting Around
Travel by car, pre-arranged driver or a sightseeing tour from Cappadocia's towns. With a package tour, check which underground city is included; it may cover only Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı.If using public transport, confirm the return service and the stop nearest the entrance before leaving Nevşehir.
Tickets and Visitor Information
Each site has a separate admission ticket. Check prices, hours and last entry on Derinkuyu's official page and Kaymaklı's official page before visiting.Initially allow around an hour per site, plus waiting and transfer time. This is a planning estimate; crowds and your group's pace can lengthen the visit.
