Ürgüp and Ortahisar, in the heart of Cappadocia, bring together old stone houses, rock castles and quieter valleys. They offer alternatives to Göreme’s busiest streets, although popular viewpoints can still draw crowds.
Ürgüp
Ürgüp is one of Cappadocia’s principal towns, known for its old neighbourhoods, stone houses and rock-cut hotels, as well as a wide choice of restaurants, cafés and local shops.Begin in the centre, then head uphill into the older quarters to see traditional architecture and views of the surrounding rock formations.
The Three Beauties
The Three Beauties, Üç Güzeller, near Ürgüp are among Cappadocia’s best-known fairy-chimney formations.A roadside viewing area makes this a short stop rather than a long hike. Morning or the period before sunset generally offers more attractive light; allow for tour-coach crowds.
Temenni Hill
Temenni Tepesi is a prominent viewpoint within Ürgüp, with a broad outlook over the town and surrounding landscape. It is accessible on foot from the centre, but the approach includes uphill stretches and steps. Sunset is a particularly appealing time to visit.
Ortahisar and its rock castle
Ortahisar is built around the enormous rock known as Ortahisar Castle, historically used for observation and defence.Narrow lanes, stone houses and small cafés surround it. The castle can be admired from nearby streets and squares; access to its upper sections depends on site conditions and the safety instructions in force when you visit.
Ortahisar Culture Museum
The Ortahisar Culture Museum presents traditional Cappadocian life through clothing, tools and displays depicting domestic and agricultural work.It is a relatively small museum that can be combined with the castle and old town. Check its current opening arrangements.
Balkan Deresi Valley
Balkan Deresi, near Ortahisar, has quiet paths, rock formations and orchards. It suits a gentle walk or photography, but has fewer facilities than the best-known tourist valleys. Wear appropriate shoes and avoid setting out as darkness approaches.
Hallaç Monastery
Hallaç Monastery, in the rocky landscape near Ortahisar, contains rooms, passages and religious spaces carved into the rock.It is generally quieter than Göreme Open-Air Museum. Check the approach and current access locally, as maintenance or road conditions can affect a visit.
Vineyards and local produce
The Ürgüp area is known for grape growing. Local products include grape molasses, grape juice and raisins.Pottery, carpet, antique and gift shops provide other browsing opportunities. Compare both quality and prices before buying.
Staying in Ürgüp or Ortahisar
Ürgüp: A practical choice for a broader range of restaurants, hotels, shopping and everyday services.Ortahisar: Appeals to visitors seeking a quieter setting, rock views and a local atmosphere within easy reach of Göreme and Ürgüp.
Both have stone and cave hotels. Check ventilation, heating and access to your particular room before booking.
Getting around
The two towns are only a few kilometres apart and can be combined in a day by car, taxi or organised tour.Local buses serve some routes, but offer less flexibility for outlying valleys and viewpoints. Confirm the route and return service in advance.
