📍 Location and introduction
Malatya lies in western Eastern Anatolia. The region's settlement history stretches back more than 4,000 years, with much earlier evidence at Arslantepe. Often called the world's apricot capital, it is a major centre of dried-apricot production, supplying international markets.

🏛️ History and landmarks
Hittite, Roman and Ottoman periods all form part of Malatya's history. Arslantepe Mound, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserves important remains of temples, domestic buildings and an early palace complex, including structures from the fourth millennium BC. The historic area of Old Malatya, in Battalgazi, also contains Ulu Mosque and surviving fortification remains.

🌳 Landscape and local life
Mountains, agricultural plains and orchards surround the city. Streams and rural valleys offer quieter landscapes beyond the urban centre. Malatya has a strong tradition of hospitality and remains an important commercial centre in Eastern Türkiye.

💡 Planning and exploring
  • May to August offers warmer-weather travel, with the apricot harvest and local celebrations falling within part of this period; check the year's harvest and event dates.
  • Include Arslantepe and Malatya's archaeological collections in your planning, but confirm access first. Arslantepe reopened on 8 August 2026 after walkway works, according to the Malatya Governorate; confirm current opening arrangements before travelling.
  • Try locally produced dried apricots in the markets, comparing varieties and asking how they were dried.
