Çamuşlu rock art in the countryside around Kağızman.

Kağızman, Digor and Arpaçay reveal different aspects of rural Kars: orchards in the Aras Valley, stone monuments in deep valleys, and villages among open upland pastures. They reward a route with two or three carefully chosen stops and enough time to appreciate village life.

Kağızman is associated with fruit-growing along the Aras, Digor with historic religious buildings, and Arpaçay with the plateau country north of Kars towards Lake Çıldır. Plan by direction rather than trying to cover every district in one day.

🌊 Kağızman and the Aras Valley

The Aras Valley has a milder setting than the high plateau around Kars. Irrigated land and orchards occupy suitable lower ground, giving the district a different agricultural character from the surrounding uplands.

Choose safe roadside stopping places for valley views. Orchards and fields are working private land: ask permission before entering, and before photographing people at work.

🍎 Orchards and the Kağızman Long Apple

Kağızman Uzun Elması, the district's distinctively elongated apple, has a registered geographical indication. Apples, apricots, walnuts and other fruit reflect favourable local growing conditions in parts of Kağızman and Digor.

Ask market sellers about the variety, growing area and harvest season. Availability depends on weather, the harvest and storage, so a product associated with the district may not be on sale throughout the year. Choose packaging and storage suited to the rest of your journey.

🪨 The Rock Art at Çamuşlu

Human and animal figures on rock faces around Çamuşlu add another layer to the region's history beyond its surviving buildings. The rural mountain setting is part of the experience.

Check the approach, road conditions and exact location with someone who knows the area. Photograph the carvings without touching them, writing on the rock or climbing across vulnerable surfaces.

Stone-built heritage in Digor.

⛪ Digor's Religious Heritage

Digor lies between the Kars and Kağızman areas near Türkiye's eastern frontier. Its valleys contain important traces of historic religious architecture, including the Beş Kilise or Five Churches complex and the remains of its Saint Sarkis Church.

Confirm the route and safe access before setting out. Damaged buildings and unstable sections should be appreciated from permitted, secure positions rather than entered for a closer photograph.

🐑 Arpaçay: Pastures and Village Life

Arpaçay's gently rolling plateau is characterised by pasture, villages and farming. Livestock, milk production, grain and fodder crops help explain the countryside you see along the road.

If local producers or markets are part of your visit, look for carpets with Caucasian motifs and traditions of natural dyeing. Ask about provenance and production rather than assuming every item offered locally was made in the district.

🧭 Planning a Realistic Rural Route

Choose one direction for each day, balancing driving, short walks and time for food. Kağızman and Digor can form one outing if the chosen stops fit the route; Arpaçay is often better given a separate day.

Carry water and food, check roads and weather, and keep a clear return plan. Allow flexibility around farming and village routines, and treat residents' workplaces and homes with consideration.
