A clear international price and a measurable margin
From the product price to what the customer pays and what the store retains

Selling a product from Türkiye for one hundred dollars may appear profitable when compared only with its purchase cost. Yet that amount may also fund packaging, shipping, clearance, payment processing and returns, and it may reach your account in a different currency at a different conversion rate. You therefore need three separate figures: what the customer pays, the cost borne by the store, and the contribution remaining before fixed expenses and taxes on profits.

This guide builds a practical pricing sheet for small international orders. It starts by defining import responsibilities, then works through a hypothetical example and tests changes in currency, shipping and discounts. All prices, conversion rates and fees in the examples are hypothetical teaching figures, rather than carrier or payment-provider quotes or current exchange rates. Replace them with your product, contract and destination costs before publishing a price.

1️⃣ Define what the displayed price includes

Write the pricing promise before entering figures. Is the customer buying a product delivered to their door with all agreed charges included, or paying for the product and shipping while taking responsibility for import charges? That choice affects customer service and the risk of refused delivery. It cannot simply be hidden on a long page far from the cart. Place an understandable statement near the total explaining which charges are included and which the recipient may bear.

Separate product value, shipping, discounts and taxes in presentation and accounting, even if you advertise free shipping. ‘Free’ means that the customer sees no additional shipping line, while the store still incurs an actual expense. Specify the country, postcode, weight and category to which the price applies. Do not offer one worldwide fixed amount based on a single nearby shipment.

Test the promise with a first-time customer: can they identify the currency charged to their card, who pays at the border and what happens if they refuse the charges? If checkout does not answer these questions, the offer needs greater clarity before its margin formula needs attention.

The result: a clear customer total and written responsibilities that can be linked to the carrier’s quote.

2️⃣ Create a cost sheet for each product and shipping route

Choose the calculation unit first: one order, or one item in a multi-item order. Allocate shared packaging and shipping consistently, then record the product’s actual cost after applicable purchasing discounts. If the price includes a tax recoverable in your circumstances, do not deduct it on assumption. Ask the accountant to identify the cost that belongs in the pricing sheet and what remains a temporary cash outflow.

The following example sells one order for one hundred dollars and assumes conversion at forty lira per dollar. Revenue means the sales value included in this model, excluding sales tax collected on behalf of a tax authority. Fixed amounts per order total two thousand five hundred lira, to which a percentage payment fee is added. The destination-charge line is hypothetical for a route on which the seller bears that expense; it does not establish legal eligibility to import.

Keep the source and validity date for every cost, such as a carrier quote, packaging invoice or payment-provider tariff. ‘It usually costs this much’ is insufficient when the weight or delivery country changes.

3️⃣ Choose DAP or DDP after establishing the importer’s role

When using Incoterms 2020, specify the named place precisely. Under DAP, the seller brings the goods to the agreed place ready for unloading, while the buyer handles import formalities and costs. Under DDP, the seller also bears import clearance and the duties and taxes allocated to it under the rule. Both terms require workable arrangements with the carrier and local parties; a trade abbreviation does not replace a license or procedure required by the destination country.

In particular, verify that the importer’s role can be fulfilled before selling a duties-inclusive service. The route may require a local party or a specific contractual arrangement, and the carrier may not offer the service for every product. Ask in writing who appears on the declaration, who pays the taxes, who receives the documents and which exclusions apply to the quote.

Do not assume that insurance is automatically compulsory under these two rules. Decide on coverage according to risk and contract terms, and distinguish cargo insurance from the carrier’s liability limits. Also identify who handles unloading where the shipment requires special equipment.

State the rule, named place and edition in your offer, then align the responsibilities with the service contract.

4️⃣ Request a shipping quote for the finished parcel

Weigh and measure the parcel after adding the product, protection and labels, then request a quote for the intended address. Do not use the product’s net weight if the carrier charges on a different weight under its service terms. Ask about volumetric weight, rounding, minimums and surcharges, rather than assuming one calculation factor for every company and route.

A useful quote states its validity period, service type and whether fuel, remote areas, clearance, storage and redelivery are included. Also request refusal and return costs. The quote may cover outbound carriage only, and a return may cost more than the original shipment. Distinguish expected transit time from a period including competent-authority review; do not base the delivery promise solely on flight time.

Turkish micro-export has specific limits and procedures handled by a qualified carrier. An order’s suitability for this procedure does not exempt it from destination-country or product-category requirements. Combine the transport quote with the required-document checklist, and ensure that the description, value and quantity agree before approving the price.

Setting a product’s price before measuring its final box can turn every successful sale into a low-margin order.

5️⃣ Separate display, charge and settlement currencies

A buyer may see a price in dollars, have their card charged in dollars, and then have the payment provider convert the amount to lira or a balance in another currency. Alternatively, the display currency may be only a visual conversion, with the actual charge in a different currency. Explain the arrangement at checkout, and inspect a test receipt and settlement statement rather than relying on a setting shown in the store dashboard.

Record the conversion rate used at each stage, fixed and percentage fees, settlement timing and whether refunds use different rates or fees. Distinguish your provider’s fees from charges the customer’s bank may impose; do not promise a total banking cost beyond what you know. If some costs are also in dollars, convert them within the same scenario before comparing margins.

Set a defined quote validity period for sales requiring negotiation or later fulfillment. For a store with publicly displayed prices, schedule regular reviews and internal thresholds that trigger recalculation. You need not predict currency movements to recognize that a fixed foreign-currency amount can leave a different contribution at settlement.

This guide assumes 40 lira per dollar for illustration; this does not represent the market rate.

6️⃣ Calculate contribution before announcing a profit percentage

In the base example, revenue is one hundred dollars multiplied by forty, or four thousand lira. The assumed three-percent payment fee is one hundred and twenty lira. Adding it to the fixed amounts of two thousand five hundred gives a variable cost allocated to the order of two thousand six hundred and twenty lira. The remaining one thousand three hundred and eighty lira represents a contribution margin of thirty-four and a half percent of revenue.

That remainder funds advertising if it is not already included in the cost sheet, as well as salaries, rent, software and other fixed expenses. Do not call it net profit after tax. If you subsequently add customer acquisition cost per order, deduct it once from contribution rather than counting it again in period expenses.

Watch the distinction between margin and markup. Margin divides the remainder by revenue, while markup divides it by the cost used. Presenting the larger percentage as margin can lead to an ill-judged discount. Write the metric’s name and formula in the sheet rather than using a column labeled only ‘profit’.

Contribution = revenue − all included variable costs. Margin = contribution ÷ revenue.

7️⃣ Derive the minimum price from the target margin

If your target contribution margin is twenty-five percent and the percentage fee is three percent, do not simply add both percentages to the order cost. The fee is charged on revenue, and the target margin is also part of revenue. In this model, required revenue equals the fixed amounts divided by one minus the fee rate minus the margin rate.

Substituting the figures gives 2500 ÷ 0.72, or approximately 3472.22 lira. At the same hypothetical conversion rate, that equals 86.8056 dollars; rounding the price upward to 86.81 dollars is appropriate for this calculated threshold. However, the final commercial price must include customer acquisition or other fees omitted from the model, with a review of any applicable tax and its presentation.

Use this formula only when the amounts and rates are defined and the denominator is positive. Tiered fees, minimum charges and taxes calculated on a different basis require further detail. Keep the floor price internally and compare it with competition and product value, rather than treating it as a promise that every order will earn the same margin.

8️⃣ Build a returns allowance from the route’s actual experience

An allowance estimates expected cost; it is not an amount actually paid on every order. The example allocates two hundred lira to each transaction to account for risk. When collecting real data, separate refusal of charges, damage, change of mind and inaccurate descriptions. Each has a different rate, cost and improvement action. Do not apply a domestic market’s return rate to a new international route without evidence.

Calculate each case’s loss including nonrefundable fees, outbound and return transport, and any reduction in product value, then deduct compensation or recovered charges only if actually received. If the product returns fit for sale, do not treat its full inventory value as a final loss. Lost inventory or goods unfit for resale require separate treatment.

At period reconciliation, replace the estimate with actual results or record a clear variance under the accountant’s method. Do not add the full allowance to the full actual return losses and report the total as an additional loss: that counts the risk twice. Also maintain refund liquidity; positive contribution does not mean cash has arrived before the customer makes a claim.

The allowance supports pricing; actual reconciliation documents what happened. Link them to avoid counting the cost twice.

9️⃣ Test currency, shipping and discounts before launching a campaign

A successful base calculation is insufficient. Test a reasonable change in conversion rate and shipping cost, then calculate the proposed discount’s effect. In the table, fixed amounts remain two thousand five hundred lira and the percentage fee remains three percent, except in the increased-shipping row. Costs are assumed to be denominated in lira and unchanged during the test. If transport or the product is priced in a foreign currency, it must also be converted.

At thirty-six lira per dollar, revenue becomes three thousand six hundred, the fee one hundred and eight, and the remainder nine hundred and ninety-two lira. The same result arises from discounting the one-hundred-dollar price by ten percent at forty lira per dollar. This equivalence is arithmetic under these assumptions, rather than an economic rule for every store.

Turn the test into a decision: when will you stop a discount, request a new transport quote or review the public price? Set actionable thresholds using your sheet’s figures. Do not use the table to forecast exchange rates or provide financial advice to the customer.

Hypothetical scenarioRevenue/fee in liraContribution and margin
100 dollars × 404000 / 1201380 / 34.50%
100 dollars × 363600 / 108992 / 27.56%
100 dollars × 444400 / 1321768 / 40.18%
Shipping increases by 200 lira4000 / 120; C=27001180 / 29.50%
10% discount; price 90 dollars × 403600 / 108992 / 27.56%

These are separate sensitivity tests; combine their effects only when calculating a scenario in which those changes actually occur together.

⁦1️⃣0️⃣⁩ Make discounts and free shipping calculated decisions

Deduct product and shipping discounts from expected revenue. A differently named marketing line is not necessarily less costly. If an order sells for one hundred dollars including transport, advertising free shipping does not reduce the six-hundred-lira cost already in the sheet. If you remove a shipping charge previously paid on top of the product price, recalculate total revenue.

When setting a free-shipping threshold, test a realistic multi-item basket. Chargeable weight may jump into a new bracket, and the second product may need a larger box or different service. Allocate fixed payment fees per order, then compare the new basket’s contribution with the normal basket’s contribution. Higher sales value does not establish improved contribution.

Link the campaign to a budget, order count and country and product conditions. Do not assume that later purchases will offset an introductory discount without retention data. Start with a test that allows prices to be adjusted before wider rollout.

⁦1️⃣1️⃣⁩ Reconcile the quote against the settlement statement

Create an internal reference linking the order to the carrier quote, invoice, waybill and payment transaction. Record expected revenue, then document actual revenue and fees in their original currencies at settlement. Keep the conversion amount, rate and date, and distinguish a tax invoice from a payment-provider report; neither replaces the other.

Treat increased weight or storage costs as a variance with an identified cause, then review the product and route responsible. If the increase recurs, update the future cost sheet. If exceptional, do not generalize without investigation, but record it in risk and allowance analysis.

Compare estimated contribution with contribution after settlement, then separately determine the period result after fixed expenses. Understanding the variance makes price updates reflect actual orders.

⁦1️⃣2️⃣⁩ Frequently asked questions and price approval checklist

Does a DDP price mean the customer will never pay anything extra?
The promise must match the actual service scope and import arrangement. Check taxes, exclusions and costs arising from delays, errors or changes to the order, and explain the conditions to the customer. The abbreviation alone does not guarantee fulfillment of every national requirement or coverage of every unexpected expense.

Can I use a personal-import exemption threshold when pricing commercial shipments?
Do not apply personal-purchase rules indiscriminately to commercial stock imports. In Saudi Arabia, for example, personal customs relief has conditions and a value threshold, and does not mean exemption from value-added tax. Establish the shipment’s nature, importer and category before using an exemption in your sheet.

When should I review the price after a currency change?
When the conversion outcome or cost breaches your margin threshold, service quotes expire, or the product’s weight or route changes. Compare the effect using actual figures, rather than basing the decision solely on a forecast of exchange-rate direction.
