The rocky Şahinkaya Canyon and reservoir waters in Vezirköprü.

Inland Samsun reveals valleys, lakes and historic towns with a character different from the coast. Vezirköprü connects with the Kızılırmak and Şahinkaya Canyon; Havza preserves memories of the independence movement alongside thermal springs; Lâdik combines lake, uplands and rural architecture. Together they give the province geographical and cultural depth, with farmland, old buildings, water and woodland forming distinct inland landscapes.

🪨 Şahinkaya and Its Narrow Waterway

Şahinkaya Canyon lies in Vezirköprü district within Altınkaya Reservoir on the Kızılırmak. Water flows between high rock walls, forming a narrow passage that contrasts with the reservoir's wider expanses. The recognised canyon section extends for approximately one and a half kilometres, combining exposed rock, water and surrounding slopes.

The view distinguishes the rocky gorge from the lake created by the dam: the present landscape reflects both older terrain and water regulation. Parts of the walls are very steep, with vegetation on the rock and wherever soil allows. Together these features give the site a clear natural identity, connected with the river's history and changing inland uses.

🏛️ Vezirköprü and Taşhan

Vezirköprü preserves an urban heritage associated with its growth and Ottoman commerce. Taşhan stands in the centre near Orta Mosque, its courtyards and rooms illustrating the organisation of commercial caravanserais. No conclusive document establishes its construction date; architectural interpretation associates it with the later Ottoman period.

Stone walls, timber elements and restored sections reveal the building's fabric. Rooms and courtyard illustrate the former relationship between storage, accommodation and trade. Surrounding markets and buildings place it within a town of work and exchange. Materials, doors and courtyards make this heritage more legible than the exterior alone.

🏠 Havza and Atatürk House Museum

Havza is associated with an early stage of the War of Independence, when Atatürk used the Mesudiye building as his headquarters after arriving in Samsun. Atatürk House Museum preserves rooms and exhibits relating to this stay, including documents, photographs, communications equipment and objects from the period. Displays also refer to towns connected with his meetings and movements, placing Havza within the wider sequence of events.

Stone and timber in the walls, floors and ceilings frame rooms explaining the building's working and residential functions. Local clothing and household objects add a social dimension to the historical account. Havza is also known for hot-water resources that form part of its geography and traditional local use. The building's history and the town's position remain central to understanding its identity.

🌿 Lâdik, Its Lake and Ambarköy

Lake Lâdik lies in an inland plain, with fish, birds and wetland vegetation. Among its familiar features are floating masses of vegetation and peat, distinct from fixed rocky islands. Nearby Akdağ uplands complete the landscape, changing markedly between greenery and snow and connecting lake and mountains within one area.

Ambarköy Open-Air Museum presents rural architecture through granaries, timber houses and features representing village life. Storage buildings reveal the relationship between farming, forest materials and the preservation of produce. Comparing houses and granaries shows differences in function and construction, while surrounding villages connect this heritage with rural life that remains part of Lâdik's character.

📌 Practical Notes

Check museum access and inland roads, particularly in winter and after rain. At Şahinkaya, observe viewing boundaries and operators' instructions for any water-based activity. Respect wetland habitats and timber buildings around Lâdik, remembering that upland weather can differ from the town.
