Erzurum is a major city in north-eastern Türkiye and one of the principal centres of Eastern Anatolia. Its high elevation brings severe winter cold, while historic architecture, religious heritage and Anatolian culture give it a distinctive atmosphere.
The twin minarets of Çifte Minareli Medrese are among Erzurum's best-known sights and an outstanding example of medieval Anatolian architecture associated with the Seljuk tradition. Erzurum Castle and historic mosques and baths, including buildings from the Ottoman period, reveal further layers of the city's past.
Palandöken is one of Türkiye's established winter sports destinations, attracting domestic and international visitors for skiing and snowy mountain scenery. In summer, the surrounding mountains offer a different setting for enjoying nature and cooler upland weather.
- Choose winter for skiing or summer for mountain scenery and milder weather; mountain conditions still vary.
- Try local food, including kaymak and Erzurum's distinctive cağ kebabı.
- Explore the old bazaar for carpets and traditional textiles.
