A virtual card can help limit exposure when shopping online in Türkiye. Using your main card at every website can increase the consequences if card details are leaked or stored insecurely.

This guide explains:
- What a virtual card is.
- How to create one through a banking app.
- When it can be useful.
- How spending controls can reduce the risk of fraud and unauthorised charges.

1️⃣ 💳 1. What Is a Virtual Card?

A virtual card is a digital card linked to an account or another card, without a separate plastic card.

It typically has:
- Its own card number.
- An expiry date.
- Security details, such as a CVV, separate from those of the main card.

The Turkish banking product commonly called Sanal Kart is generally intended for online or other card-not-present purchases. Do not assume it can be used at an ATM or physical terminal; supported uses depend on the issuer and card product.

The basic idea is to use separate payment details and a controlled limit rather than exposing the main card details at every website.

2️⃣ 🏦 2. Getting a Virtual Card from Your Bank

Many banks in Türkiye offer virtual-card controls through mobile banking. Availability and menu names depend on your bank and card.

A typical process is:
1) Open the bank’s mobile app.
2) Go to the cards section, often labelled Kartlarım.
3) Look for “Sanal Kart” or “Virtual Card”.
4) Create the card to obtain its number, expiry date and CVV.
5) Where supported:
- Link it to the relevant credit card or current account.
- Set a spending limit.

Tip:
> If you hold several cards with the same bank, check which card or account will fund virtual-card purchases.

3️⃣ 💰 3. Setting a Spending Limit

One useful feature is control over the amount available for spending.

Illustrative example:
- You want to make a 250-lira purchase.
- Open the banking app.
- Set an appropriate available limit, for example 260 or 270 lira.
- Make the purchase.
- After confirming completion, reduce the limit to zero or a small amount where supported.

A low limit can reduce exposure if the details are compromised. It is a control, not an absolute guarantee that no further charge can occur: existing authorisations, recurring arrangements and issuer rules still need to be considered.

4️⃣ 🔐 4. How a Virtual Card Can Reduce Risk

1️⃣ Keep main card details separate
- Use a dedicated virtual card instead of entering the main card details everywhere.
- If those details leak, they relate to the virtual card and its controls rather than directly revealing the main card number.

2️⃣ Adjust the available limit
- Where supported, keep it at:
- Zero.
- A small amount, such as 100 lira.
- Raise it when needed for a purchase.
- This can restrict new payment attempts, subject to the issuer’s rules and transactions already authorised.

3️⃣ Replace the virtual card
- Some banks let you cancel a virtual card and create another number.
- This can make compromised details harder to reuse.
- Cancelling a card or lowering its limit does not itself cancel a subscription or contractual payment obligation.

5️⃣ 🛍️ 5. When Might It Be Useful?

✅ A separate virtual card may help manage exposure when:

• Separating your main card details when buying from a merchant whose trustworthiness you have checked.
• Organising legitimate subscriptions and monitoring them, cancelling through the service when no longer needed.
• Setting appropriate purchase limits and reviewing transaction records.
• If you distrust a site or feel uncomfortable, stop and verify it instead of relying on the card alone.

It can also help organise:
- Family spending through products and permissions the issuer allows, with an appropriate limit; do not share card details or authentication codes contrary to its terms.
- Different service categories, such as a card dedicated to subscriptions.

A virtual card is not a reason to proceed with a store or service you believe is fraudulent. Do not share banking access or verification codes.

6️⃣ ⚠️ 6. Common Mistakes

❌ Leaving the limit unnecessarily high
- Raising a limit once and leaving it high reduces the benefit of spending controls.
- Where appropriate, increase it for the purchase and reduce it afterwards.

❌ Using one virtual card indiscriminately
- Separate cards for particular services or websites may make monitoring and control easier, where your bank supports them.

❌ Failing to review transactions
- Continue checking the transaction list in the banking app.
- Investigate unfamiliar charges even when a virtual card was used.

7️⃣ 📲 7. A Practical Purchase Example

1) Establish the total payable, for example 180 lira.
2) Open the banking app:
- Select the virtual card.
- Set a suitable available limit, for example 190–200 lira.
3) At the checkout, enter the virtual card’s number, expiry date and CVV.
4) Complete the payment and any required 3D Secure authentication.
5) After confirming success:
- Reopen the banking app.
- Reduce the limit to zero or a small amount where appropriate.

This provides a separate, controlled payment layer between the main account and the online merchant.

8️⃣ 🧠 8. A Virtual Card Does Not Replace Careful Checking

Continue to:
- Check the merchant’s reputation and website address. HTTPS protects the connection but does not by itself prove the merchant is trustworthy.
- Avoid payment links in unexpected SMS messages or emails from unknown senders.
- Keep 3D Secure codes private.
- Avoid saving card details on shared or insecure devices.

📌 The principle:
> A virtual card is a useful control when combined with careful choices about where and how to pay.

9️⃣ 📌 Summary

A virtual card can:
- Reduce exposure when shopping online.
- Provide control over the available spending limit, according to the issuer’s rules.
- Help manage the risk of unauthorised use.

The basic workflow is straightforward:
- Create the card through your bank where supported.
- Adjust the limit when needed.
- Review the payment and reduce the limit afterwards where appropriate.

If you shop at different websites regularly, a virtual card can be a useful part of your payment setup. Keep checking transactions and the merchant itself; the card is an additional control rather than a guarantee of safety.

✅ A practical checklist

Card actionLimit of its benefit
Set a limitSubject to the bank product; no guarantee for every movement
Lower the limitDoes not cancel a subscription or contract
Separate card detailsDoes not make a suspicious site trustworthy
