🧭 Türkiye Transport Guides Index
Choose your route, from arriving at the airport to your final return journey

Start with the journey you want to make, then choose the guide that covers it. Getting to a hotel in Istanbul is different from travelling to another city, and hiring a car for northern Türkiye is different from getting around the city with a child and a pushchair. This index brings together 24 guides in eight sections, making it easier to find advice on routes, payment, luggage and return journeys.

If this is your first visit, start with Your First Day in Türkiye: Transport and an Offline Return Plan, then the relevant airport guide, followed by the guides to the city's transport cards and everyday routes. If you already know the city and need help with a specific issue, use the table below to find the section closest to your needs.

💡 Read two guides that complement one another: The airport guide sets out your arrival options, the card guide explains payment, and the family guide helps you choose connections that suit your group. Do not make the fare for a single mode of transport or the time spent on a train your only deciding factor.

🏙️ 1 — Istanbul and Transport Connections

Understand the network, choose the right direction of travel, and connect trams, the metro and ferries while planning your return to the hotel.

💳 2 — Cards and Tickets

Choose the right fare product, understand how to buy and top up a card, and deal with a declined card or a low balance.

✈️ 3 — Airports and Arrivals

Start with the airport code, then compare the journey from the terminal to your hotel door, and plan your return transfer around your flight time.

🚆 4 — Intercity Travel

Identify your departure and arrival stations or terminals, choose a seat, handle luggage, and compare trains, buses and flights.

🚖 5 — Taxis, Apps and Private Transfers

Check the destination, meter and payment method, prepare your phone, and choose a vehicle with enough room for your passengers and bags.

🚗 6 — Driving and Car Hire

Arrange collection and drop-off, understand the deposit and insurance, and keep track of toll roads and driving requirements.

🏞️ 7 — Northern Türkiye

Choose transport for Uzungöl, Rize and Ayder, avoid poorly planned connections, and arrange your return journey and stops.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 8 — Families and Accessible Travel

Plan for children, pushchairs, older people and people with disabilities, and prepare for your first day and the journey back without relying on the internet.

📝 A Planning Sequence That Brings the Guides Together

  1. Write down the exact destination: The correct airport, departure station or terminal, or hotel entrance, rather than just the city or neighbourhood name.
  2. Identify the time you will actually be travelling: Your arrival journey begins once you are ready to leave the terminal. For departure, work backwards from the time you are required to arrive for your trip.
  3. Compare two complete routes: Include walking, waiting, transfers and the final leg, and take account of luggage and what each family member can manage.
  4. Check payment arrangements: The card or ticket name, balance and fare for each leg, plus the rules for children and the fare product you will use.
  5. Plan the return before your outing: The direction of the train, ferry pier or vehicle meeting point, and the last suitable connection to your hotel.
  6. Save a workable alternative: Another station or entrance you have checked is suitable, or an appropriate vehicle, with a point at which to switch plans if the service changes.
  7. Prepare an offline copy: Station names in Turkish, your hotel address, images of the plan and contact numbers, saved on more than one phone if needed.
  8. Check again on the day of travel: Operator alerts, fares, timetables, lifts and entrances may change.

📌 Make the index your starting point, then read the guide for your journey. The details and examples explain how to choose, while current timetables, fares and accessibility should be checked when you travel. Do not mix up the instructions for different cities or operators.
