A car gives you the freedom to reach villages, beaches and accommodation outside cities, but it requires a clear decision before payment. Start by asking whether you need it for the entire trip or only certain days, then choose the company, contract, category and protection. These practical steps help visitors and families understand each charge, inspect the vehicle and return it with a complete record.

When to hire, and when to delay collection
If your first stay is in central Istanbul and your destinations are served by metro and tram, compare the hire cost with parking, tolls and time in traffic. An airport transfer followed by car collection on the morning you leave for other destinations may be easier than paying to keep it in a hotel car park for several days. A car becomes more useful for scattered villages or accommodation far from stations, especially when the family travels with luggage.Write one line for each day: overnight base, destinations, likely route and parking. A hotel advertising parking is not by itself a reason to book a car. Ask whether a space is guaranteed, the entrance clearance, separate charges and suitability for your vehicle size. Plan return day too: a city-branch return differs from an airport return and may require a separate onward transfer.
Documents: legal eligibility and branch acceptance are separate
For a Saudi visitor entering as a foreign national, NVI gives a six-month period for using a foreign licence, and the Foreign Ministry explains that it runs from entry. This does not guarantee every company's acceptance of every document or vehicle category, or make an expired licence valid. Carry the original and check its category, expiry and translation requirements, particularly if details are unclear in Latin script.Avis's published conditions, for example, require a credit card in the renter's name and the cardholder's presence, and address legible Latin-script licence details or a notarised translation where absent. These are company conditions, not a statement that every branch accepts debit cards or an international permit in the same way.
- Before paying, tell the branch the licence's issuing country, category, issue and expiry dates, and ask about the international permit or translation required for your case.
- Check minimum age and licence-holding period for the category; economy cars, luxury vehicles and minibuses may differ.
- Prepare your passport, entry evidence, original licence, physical card and the branch's written reply.
- Check and register any additional driver's documents before they drive. Sharing the driving within a family requires the contractual arrangement.
Choose for passengers and luggage
Seat count does not explain luggage space. A five-seat car may not comfortably accommodate four large suitcases and a pushchair. Request dimensions or a luggage-capacity example, and give the number and sizes of your bags. A quoted model may be followed by “or similar”, so check transmission, category size, doors, air conditioning and any essential specification. For long mountain drives, choose a vehicle you can drive confidently that carries your luggage; a high-clearance appearance does not give permission for off-road use. An automatic may suit someone avoiding clutch work in congestion or on slopes. An electric car requires a charging and time plan, plus a clear return-battery requirement, rather than a daily-price comparison alone.
Booking, deposits and available card limit
There are three different financial items: rental price, extras and deposit. A deposit may be a hold on the credit limit or an amount charged and later refunded, depending on the contract. Ask its type, amount and currency, which protection the price includes, and when release begins. Payment through an intermediary does not prove the collection branch accepts your deposit card.| Question before paying | Why a written answer helps |
|---|---|
| Is this an accepted credit card in the renter's name? | Avoids arriving with a prepaid booking and a rejected card. |
| What is the deposit for this category? | Lets you leave enough available limit for rental and other expenses. |
| Is it a hold or a charge followed by a refund? | They appear and are tracked differently in the banking app. |
| How will the branch provide release or refund evidence? | Helps the bank investigate if the money is slow to reappear. |
Understand protection beyond “fully insured”
Request the protection schedule with each product's name and limits. Third-party liability differs from protection for damage to the hire car, theft, occupants and excess reduction. Budget presents products serving different purposes, so ask what happens in a particular accident rather than merely whether insurance exists. The excess is the amount that may remain payable under the conditions; it is not necessarily the deposit. Check whether the limit applies per incident or rental period and whether a zero excess applies only to covered damage. Distinguish branch-sold protection from an intermediary's reimbursement policy. The latter may require payment first and a later claim, so do not assume it prevents the branch taking a deposit.
- Ask about glass, tyres, wheels, underbody, roof and mirrors, and whether separate protection is needed.
- Ask about lost keys or documents, misfuelling, interior damage and missing equipment.
- Read assistance, towing and replacement-car limits; assistance availability does not cover every associated cost.
- Request accident-document requirements, submission deadlines and the procedure for minor damage involving no other party.
Exclusions that can change an accident outcome
A contract may make protection dependent on a registered driver, suitable-road use and compliance with reporting procedures. Enterprise's contract, for example, includes exclusions involving unlisted drivers, wrong fuel, certain uncovered damage and accident procedures. Read your own booking contract rather than importing another company's terms.Turn the general question into a situation: “If a stone breaks the windscreen, what do I pay and which documents are needed?” Then ask what to do if a door is scratched in a car park and the other party cannot be found. Keep answers with the confirmation. Verbal reassurance does not explain a conflicting written term. You need not choose the most expensive package before understanding your needs; compare what it actually adds to the basic package.
Calculate the whole booking cost
Start with the full rental period, then add required products, fuel, parking and tolls. Check whether mileage is daily or total and whether long rentals have different limits. Ask for the tax-inclusive excess-mileage rate and charges for an additional driver, child seat, different return branch and out-of-hours service.Five-day worked example: hire at TRY1,200 per day = TRY6,000; chosen protection at TRY250 daily = TRY1,250; child seat at TRY100 daily = TRY500; one-way fee TRY800; expected fuel TRY2,000; parking and tolls TRY900. Total budget: TRY11,450 before damage or excess mileage. A fully returned deposit is not a final expense, but still requires funds or available credit.
If a hypothetical contract allows 1,000 km in total and your route is 1,220 km, the excess is 220 km. At an illustrative TRY4 per kilometre, that is TRY880 plus tax if the rate excludes it. Compare a larger mileage package with that amount before booking.
Collection inspection: ten useful minutes
Inspect the car in good light before leaving. If arriving at night, ask for it to be moved somewhere adequately lit. Photograph every side and close-ups of scratches, wheels, glass and lights. A general video helps but can miss a small scratch; combine it with clear damage and plate photographs, keeping the file dates.- Match the plate, category, transmission and contract; record mileage and fuel or battery level.
- Inspect glass, mirrors, roof, tyres, cabin and boot as well as the exterior panels.
- Try lights, wipers, air conditioning, horn and locks, and check visible warning lights.
- Confirm equipment, documents, key and agreed child seat or accessory.
- Have all visible damage recorded on the collection report and obtain a signed or electronic copy before departure.
Prepare the family before the first kilometre
Reserve a child seat for the child's height, weight and stage, and confirm availability at the collection branch. Inspect its condition, harness and installation before seating the child; a general promise of “a child seat” is insufficient. Arrange passengers so everyone can reach a seat belt without bags around their feet.Keep water, tissues and a small day bag in the cabin and secure larger luggage in the boot where possible. Agree who follows navigation and set the mount and route while parked. Make the first transfer short after a tiring flight and begin a long driving day after rest. Include family stops in arrival estimates rather than counting driving alone.
Fuel, tolls and extensions during the rental
Have the employee confirm the fuel type in writing and check the filler cap. Petrol and diesel are not interchangeable; after misfuelling, stop operating the car and request the company's instructions. Retain fuel receipts and check the return policy: full-to-full, same level or another specified arrangement.Ask who manages the HGS balance and how tolls and service fees reach you. Record and follow up any unsettled crossing with the branch; do not add a second sticker yourself. For a changed return day, obtain the extension agreement and price before the contract expires. A delay of several hours can affect charging and protection. Sending a message alone does not establish approval.
Breakdowns and accidents
Start with passenger and scene safety. In an emergency call 112, giving your location, direction, plate and any injured-person count. Then contact the assistance service specified in the rental contract. Do not independently arrange a paid repair or tow before establishing company approval, unless urgent intervention is needed to protect people.Photograph the scene and damage when safe, gather the other party's details and obtain documents required by the official procedure. Follow police and company instructions about the report. Request the incident reference and submission method, and ask whether you need a replacement vehicle and who pays. Afterwards keep a short chronology: incident and call times, employee's name and what was agreed.
Return: allow time for parking and inspection before the flight
Confirm the return-point address, access route and company car park. At an airport, the paperwork office may be separate from the vehicle-return area, followed by a terminal transfer. Allow time for refuelling, inspection, settlement and moving the family and bags. Do not make car return coincide with flight check-in opening.Photograph the fuel, odometer, plate and all four sides before handover. Remove belongings from pockets, under seats and the boot. Obtain the return report, acknowledgement of recorded damage or its absence, and an invoice for known charges. For out-of-hours return, establish where to leave the key and when responsibility ends. Retain proof of the time, location and agreed method.
After the trip: deposits and later debits
Track the deposit release or refund with its reference; how soon it appears depends on the company's process and bank. Tolls or fines may arrive after rental. Match claims to the plate and contract period and request itemisation: toll, fine, fuel, damage or service fee.For a discrepancy, begin with a written enquiry stating the contract number, amount, date and evidence requested, and retain the reply. Then follow the company's or bank's complaint process appropriate to the transaction. Do not assume every later debit is wrong, or accept it without explanation. The booking, collection and return reports, photographs and receipts make differences easier to review.
Common rental questions
Do I need a car from day one?Choose its actual period of use. Two stationary days add rental and parking to the budget.
Is the deposit the excess?
They may differ. Read each clause and how it is applied.
Is a bigger car always better for a family?
Balance luggage, seats, parking and your driving confidence, then choose for the trip.
Can I let a relative drive?
Arrange their addition under the contract before they drive, even with a valid licence.
What matters most at return?
The handover report recording condition and time, followed by settlement details and evidence or tracking of the deposit release.
Bookings tied to arrival time
Before confirming an airport rental, send the flight number and ask how long the branch waits for a delayed landing, whether it works after midnight and what happens if arrival moves to the next day. Check cancellation, no-show and early-return terms. A slightly dearer flexible rate may suit a changeable itinerary better than a hard-to-amend prepaid booking. Save collection time in local time and verify the arrival date for overnight flights. Where an intermediary is involved, establish who handles changes: the intermediary for the booking or branch for the vehicle contract. Keep both contact numbers to avoid being passed between them in arrivals with the family.
