Step-by-step routes to Taksim, Sultanahmet, Şişli and Kadıköy
Sabiha Gökçen Airport, SAW, is on Istanbul's Asian side. Reaching Taksim or Sultanahmet means crossing to Europe; Kadıköy or a hotel near M4 can be much simpler. Choose after identifying the hotel entrance, your actual terminal-exit time and how easily you can manage bags at interchanges. These details matter more than simply comparing “metro” with “coach”.
Before choosing transport
Save the hotel's Turkish name, address and map link. Ask which station and exit best suit luggage, and record interchange names as they appear on signs. Prepare payment and sufficient balance for the complete trip, with an offline plan. In a family group, decide who keeps tickets and counts bags, then leave together from a fixed point after collection.
The basic comparison
| Option | Advantage | What needs attention |
|---|---|---|
| M4 then Marmaray | Rail crossing to Sirkeci or Yenikapı without bridge traffic | Interchange passages, gates and walking inside stations |
| HAVABÜS to Taksim | Useful for a hotel near arrival, with less bag handling | Traffic, departure time and final leg |
| M4 to Kadıköy | One train to central Kadıköy | Exit choice and distance to the hotel or Moda |
| HAVABÜS to Kadıköy | An alternative with a luggage hold and waterfront stop | Waiting, traffic and the current stop location |
| Taxi or private transfer | Closer to the door with fewer changes | Capacity, meter or inclusive price, and child seat |
Finding M4 at the airport
Follow Metro / M4 signs inside the terminal. The airport identifies a Terminal entrance among those for Sabiha Gökçen Havalimanı station. Board towards Kadıköy for the city. Check the destination display and save your exit station's written name: an Arabic transliteration does not change the Turkish sign. The published full-line journey to Kadıköy is approximately 52 minutes aboard, not from bag collection to hotel door. Add station access, waiting, any interchange and the final walk. With a pushchair or mobility difficulty, look for Asansör, lift, and ask staff about an available route if an entrance or lift is closed.
Route 1: Sirkeci and Sultanahmet
- Board M4 towards Kadıköy at the airport.
- Leave at Ayrılık Çeşmesi, before the Kadıköy terminus, following Marmaray signs.
- Choose Marmaray towards the European side. Check the stops towards Halkalı or the westbound service calling at Sirkeci; do not board towards Gebze.
- Leave at Sirkeci. Walk if the hotel is near a suitable exit, after checking distance and entrance.
- For Sultanahmet, reach the Sirkeci T1 tram stop, board towards Bağcılar and leave at Sultanahmet. Gülhane may suit some hotels better; decide from the address.
Return to SAW: From Sultanahmet, take T1 towards Kabataş to Sirkeci, then Marmaray towards the Asian side, checking that it calls at Ayrılık Çeşmesi. Change to M4 towards Sabiha Gökçen Havalimanı to the airport. Read actual east/west service displays rather than memorising a line colour alone.
Route 2: Taksim
By rail: M4 towards Kadıköy to Ayrılık Çeşmesi, Marmaray towards Europe to Yenikapı, then M2 towards Hacıosman to Taksim. Follow M2 signs and its gate/payment arrangements at Yenikapı. A shared station name does not make the services one train. At Taksim, choose the exit for the hotel. The square is above some Beyoğlu streets and İstiklal is long: Şişhane on M2 may suit a hotel near the lower end better than Taksim. For Cihangir or a sloping street, examine the final walk; “Taksim hotel” does not mean easy level access.
Direct coach alternative: HAVABÜS serves SAW–Taksim. Its current page names Gezi Parkı Metro Çıkışı on Cumhuriyet Caddesi, while older descriptions may refer to the Divan hotel. Open the operator's current pin and confirm boarding and arrival with staff rather than using an old image. The coach reduces bag changes but remains affected by road traffic.
Rail return: M2 towards Yenikapı to that terminus, Marmaray east to Ayrılık Çeşmesi, then M4 towards SAW. For the coach, open Taksim → Sabiha Gökçen and verify stop and time: the airport-departure timetable is different.
Route 3: Şişli and Osmanbey
Use M4 and Marmaray to Yenikapı as above, then M2 towards Hacıosman. Compare Osmanbey for hotels near Nişantaşı and Şişli-Mecidiyeköy for Mecidiyeköy. Şişli is a broad administrative district: an unsuitable station can leave another taxi journey despite reaching the correct district. If taking HAVABÜS to Taksim, check the walk from its stop to M2 and onward to the hotel. That can work with manageable walking; a short taxi may be easier with bags. Compare the last stage before buying rather than discovering an unplanned change on arrival.
Return: From Osmanbey or Şişli, M2 towards Yenikapı, Marmaray to Ayrılık Çeşmesi and M4 to the airport. If using Taksim's coach instead, verify the metro or car needed to reach its stop at your departure hour, particularly before dawn.
A metro train at an Istanbul station; save your direction and return station before leaving.
Route 4: Kadıköy and Üsküdar
Central Kadıköy: Take M4 towards Kadıköy to the terminus and choose the hotel-side exit. For Moda or streets inland from the waterfront, add walking or a short local stage: Kadıköy station is not every hotel door. A hotel near Kozyatağı or Bostancı on M4 may suit an earlier stop.Üsküdar: M4 to Ayrılık Çeşmesi, then Marmaray west to Üsküdar, followed by your hotel transfer. Üsküdar is still on the Asian side; there is no need to continue under the Bosphorus to Sirkeci for a destination there.
HAVABÜS Kadıköy: The waterfront alternative uses the operator's named Kadıköy Rıhtım İETT Bus Stops. Check its current map pin because some written street descriptions can be outdated. Return from Kadıköy by M4 towards Sabiha Gökçen; from Üsküdar, Marmaray east to Ayrılık Çeşmesi, then M4.
Fares: dated figures and changing conditions
| Service | Displayed on 7 October 2026 | Not included / check separately |
|---|---|---|
| HAVABÜS SAW–Taksim | TRY 485 per passenger | Transfer from the arrival point to the hotel |
| HAVABÜS SAW–Kadıköy | TRY 300 per passenger | Onward transport from the waterfront |
| M4, Marmaray and possibly M2/T1 | Check each stage's current tariff and gates | The first line's ticket does not automatically cover every line |
| Car | Meter or written quote according to service | Confirm tolls, waiting and parking |
Prepare Istanbulkart or an accepted product and enough balance for rail. Do not assume every card receives transfer discounts or that Marmaray uses M4's fare. Read gate and refund instructions applicable to your card rather than budgeting an unconfirmed refund. Check the coach route's accepted payment methods and keep an alternative to a single foreign card.
How long does it take?
Separate time aboard from the complete journey. HAVABÜS publishes approximately 90 minutes for Taksim and 60 for Kadıköy, subject to traffic. M4's approximate 52 minutes covers the full train ride to Kadıköy. Terminal time, waits, transfers and walks are additional stages. For a personal planning example, allow 15–25 minutes to reach boarding, 10–25 waiting, 60–90 travelling on the route you checked and 10–25 for the final change or walk. Add the components and replace them with current information. These are illustrative planning figures, not a timetable or guaranteed duration. For the return flight, use conservative estimates and airline requirements rather than the map's best possible time.

Does the metro operate at night?
M4's published standard hours are 06:00–00:00, with night service on Friday-to-Saturday and Saturday-to-Sunday nights under current Metro İstanbul arrangements and notices. That does not guarantee Marmaray or every connection runs simultaneously. Check the whole route, open station entrances and any different night tariff.HAVABÜS shows separate directions and a delayed-flight service note for 01:00–04:00. Do not turn it into a promise of half-hourly coaches for every arrival; ask at the service point in that window. The main timetable and route-detail page can differ on final departures. Resolve the chosen service with the operator rather than selecting whichever time suits your hopes.

Bags and family travel
- With two large cases and a pushchair, count each lift and gate change. One coach plus a short car journey may be easier than three rail stages.
- Keep medication, documents and tickets with you. Mark bags placed in the coach hold and collect every piece on arrival.
- With a pushchair, use the lift rather than the escalator. If no lift is available or it is out of service, ask station staff for the available route.
- Give a car provider passenger count, bag count and required child seat. “VIP” alone does not establish capacity.
- For a narrow or pedestrian street, obtain a nearby drop-off name and walking directions to reception: a car can still leave a final walk.

Names and phrases that help
Save Ayrılık Çeşmesi, Sirkeci and Yenikapı separately. To check the platform, show the station name and ask “Bu tren Sirkeci’ye gidiyor mu?” — “Does this train go to Sirkeci?” For a lift, “Asansör nerede?” means “Where is the lift?” Written names and a short phrase help staff without requiring fluent Turkish.Show “Taksim” or “Kadıköy” before loading a coach bag and ask about the stop you need. For a return car, write the hotel, SAW and an accessible pickup entrance. For lost property, provide line, date, boarding time, arrival point and item description; a city name alone is less useful. Keep ticket and receipt until the journey ends and check possessions before leaving the platform or vehicle.

Questions and common mistakes
Does M4 go directly to Taksim? No. The rail route changes to Marmaray and M2; the Taksim coach is another option.
Do I change to Marmaray at Kadıköy?
For this route, change at Ayrılık Çeşmesi, before Kadıköy.
Can I reach Sultanahmet by rail?
Yes, via Marmaray to Sirkeci, then walking or T1 according to the hotel and available services.
Should I take the Kadıköy coach to a European-side hotel without an onward plan?
No. Kadıköy is Asian-side and requires another crossing; check every stage.
Does night travel guarantee a quick road journey?
Traffic may ease, but availability, works, maintenance and service still matter. Retain your margin.
What matters most for the return?
Save directions, the last suitable connection and SAW. Do not select IST or request an unspecified “airport”.
