Turkish Citizenship: Main Routes, Requirements and Application Steps
Turkish citizenship can be acquired through different legal routes, each with its own conditions and competent decision. This overview updates the practical guidance in the 2025 guide. Eligibility to apply is not a guarantee of approval, and passport visa access should be checked for your nationality and destination when planning travel rather than relying on a fixed country count.
Main routes
- General naturalisation: normally requires five years of qualifying continuous residence before application and the other conditions in Law 5901. Not every type of stay counts in the same way.
- Marriage: a person married to a Turkish citizen for at least three years, with the marriage continuing, may apply subject to the statutory family-life and other conditions. Marriage alone does not automatically confer citizenship.
- Qualifying investment: an exceptional route subject to formal certification and the competent decision. Examples include eligible property worth at least USD 400,000 with the required three-year disposal restriction, or a qualifying bank deposit of at least USD 500,000 held for three years. Detailed asset, payment and certification rules also apply.
- Other exceptional cases: categories specified by law, assessed through the competent authorities; a claim of making a useful contribution is not an automatic entitlement.
- Birth or descent: citizenship through a Turkish parent follows the statutory descent and parentage rules. Birth in Türkiye alone does not ordinarily make a child Turkish; the law also protects certain children who would otherwise acquire no nationality.
General naturalisation conditions
These include legal capacity under the applicable law, qualifying residence, evidence of an intention to settle, sufficient Turkish, income or occupation to support the applicant and dependants, good moral character, no public-health obstacle and no national-security or public-order impediment. A job or property may support an intention to settle but does not replace the remaining conditions. A long-term or permanent residence permit is not a universal prerequisite for every route.Documents
Use the checklist for your specific route from NVİ. A general application may require its designated form, identity/nationality and birth records, civil-status documents, required photographs, evidence of qualifying residence and income, health documentation and the service-fee receipt. Foreign documents may need the prescribed translation and authentication. Do not use a universal six-photograph list or assume an application is completed solely through a migration website.Application process
- Identify the legal route and obtain the current NVİ requirements.
- Ask the competent provincial population and citizenship directorate, or relevant Turkish mission abroad where applicable, about submission and appointments.
- Prepare the route-specific form and authenticated documents, then submit through the prescribed channel.
- Respond to document requests, interviews or further checks.
- Track the file through the official NVİ enquiry linked from its citizenship system or the available official enquiry service.
- If citizenship is granted, follow registration and identity-card procedures. A passport is a separate document application, not automatically handed over with a citizenship decision.
How long does it take?
There is no universal guaranteed 6–12 month completion period. The route, file completeness, checks and competent decision affect the timeline. Use your official reference for follow-up and do not interpret an intermediate status or an informal message as final approval. Before applying
Have the authority check which residence periods count and how absences affect continuity. The current general statutory rule allows total absences of up to 12 months within the required residence period, subject to the applicable rules; do not rely on an old blanket six-month limit or assume every stay qualifies. Keep identity, address and residence information consistent. For the marriage route, the continuing marriage and required family-life conditions must be demonstrated. Check the consequences under your other nationality's law separately.Official references
