A Turkish bank account can be useful for residents, students and some visitors who need salary payments, transfers or bill payments. This guide retains its 2025 framing and sets out the documents, application steps and questions foreign nationals should check.

Editorial clarification — 8 October 2026: Account opening is subject to the bank’s current eligibility, identity, residence and compliance checks. A passport, tax number or visit to a state bank does not guarantee approval. Remote onboarding also depends on the document and provider. Papara is an electronic-money service rather than a bank; Enpara has specific foreign-customer conditions. Consumer account-maintenance fees are not a normal TRY 5–15 monthly charge. See İş Bankası’s foreign-applicant information, Enpara’s conditions and BDDK’s account-fee explanation.

Why open an account?

An eligible account can make it easier to:
  • Receive salary payments or bank transfers.
  • Pay electricity, water and internet bills.
  • Make online purchases or receive supported payments.
  • Pay for health insurance or keep financial records that may be relevant to a residence application.
  • Use supported international bank transfers or bank-funded transfer services.
A bank account is not automatically a legal requirement for every residence renewal or health-insurance policy. Check the actual application/payment requirements. Wise is also subject to Türkiye-address restrictions, rather than being an unrestricted bank-account substitute.

Banks to consider

  • Ziraat Bankası: A state-controlled bank with branch, digital and foreign-currency services. Confirm your eligibility and documents with the bank.
  • VakıfBank: Another state-controlled bank; ask about the TRY, USD or EUR account product you need and its application conditions.
  • Garanti BBVA: A private bank with digital services; branch and remote account-opening rules differ.
  • İş Bankası: Offers branch/digital banking and information for eligible foreign applicants.
  • DenizBank: A further option to ask about your particular nationality, residence status and required documents; acceptance cannot be promised for “most nationalities”.
The most suitable bank depends on your circumstances, location, language needs and transactions. “Best” or “easiest” is not an official acceptance category.

Documents to prepare

Ask the chosen bank for its current checklist. Depending on the application, it may request:
  • A valid passport and any required translation or additional identity document.
  • A foreign identity number (YKN) and valid residence/other status document, where required.
  • Official address evidence or an accepted utility bill in your name.
  • The tax-identification information the bank requires, such as a Turkish tax number where applicable. Ask which number applies to you rather than assuming every applicant needs a separate new number.
  • A suitable mobile number for verification and banking messages; confirm whether a Turkish number is required.
The bank may also ask about occupation, income, tax residence, account purpose and source of funds. Supplying the checklist does not bypass its approval process.

Applying at a branch

  1. Contact a suitable branch beforehand to confirm that it can assess your application and which documents to bring.
  2. At the branch, say “Hesap açmak istiyorum” — “I would like to open an account.”
  3. Provide the required original documents and accurate customer information.
  4. Read the customer form, account agreement and fee disclosures; ask for an explanation before signing anything you do not understand.
  5. If approved, confirm the account details, card-delivery arrangements and activation steps.
The source’s same-day opening and five-to-seven-day card delivery were indicative, not guaranteed. Processing and delivery can take longer depending on the checks and location.

Opening an account online

Some banks offer remote applications, but the route depends on your identity document and eligibility. Enpara describes video or address-visit verification and requires foreign customers to have lived in Türkiye for at least six months, be domestically resident with a YKN and speak Turkish.

Papara offers app/web registration for an electronic-money account. Financial use requires applicable identity verification; its current foreign verification help describes a residence-permit document. See Papara’s verification instructions. Neither provider should be presented as guaranteed passport-only onboarding for any visitor.

If a physical card is offered, confirm its delivery and activation process directly with the provider.

Common account types

TypeCurrencyPurpose and conditions
Current account: VadesizTRY or a supported foreign currencyDay-to-day transfers and payments; check card linkage and service availability
Time-deposit account: VadeliTRY or a supported foreign currencyA deposit for an agreed term and interest rate; payment timing, early withdrawal and tax depend on the product
Foreign-currency account: Döviz HesabıSupported currencies such as USD or EURHolding and transferring foreign currency; conversion and transfer charges may apply
A time deposit does not automatically pay a guaranteed monthly profit. Distinguish the advertised gross return from the amount after any applicable tax or charges.

Common problems and how to respond

The bank declines the application: Ask whether the issue is eligibility, a missing document or a particular product. You can ask another suitable bank to assess an application, but a different branch cannot be assumed to waive regulatory requirements.

The bank requests a residence permit: Ask whether a genuine non-resident account route exists for your circumstances and what evidence it requires. Do not rely on a general promise that a passport alone is sufficient.

A foreign phone number is not accepted: Check the bank’s contact/verification requirements and, if necessary, arrange a suitable Turkish number in your own control. Keep it current so you can receive security messages.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open an account without a residence permit? Some banks may assess eligible non-resident applications, but there is no general guarantee. Confirm the chosen bank’s current route and complete documentation before visiting.

Can I open a USD account? Banks offer supported foreign-currency products, subject to account approval and their current terms. Ask for the appropriate Döviz Hesabı.

Are there monthly account fees? Consumer deposit/participation account opening and maintenance functions cannot be charged in the way the original TRY 5–15 claim suggested. Separate permitted transaction, card or other service charges may apply; check the current tariff.

Can I transfer between a bank account, Enpara and Papara? Eligible domestic transfer features may allow this using correct current account details. Enpara is a bank and Papara an electronic-money provider; check each account’s verification, sender and limit requirements rather than assuming a universal linking function.

Additional tips

  • Open and use the account in your own name; do not lend it to someone else.
  • Keep a copy of the account agreement and important bank communications.
  • Use the official banking app for supported routine tasks and enable transaction alerts.
  • Give the correct tax/identity details required for official financial transactions and keep changes in your address, phone and tax residence up to date.
