Stem Cell Donation in Türkiye: Registration, Matching and Preparing to Donate

Registering as a potential blood-forming stem cell donor differs from ordinary blood donation and from declaring organ donation after death. The registration sample supports testing and tissue typing. The team may contact you later if a match is found; the sample does not complete donation or reserve your cells for a particular patient.

⁦1️⃣⁩ Confirm the eligibility scope

The recruitment age range for new unrelated volunteer candidates is 18–35, alongside health assessment and informed consent. This concerns new registry recruitment, not every family donation or transplant procedure. Confirm current requirements with the centre, especially if you have registered before.

Disclose conditions, medicines, recent procedures and health changes. Do not stop treatment to appear eligible. Initial recruitment and final assessment after a match can have different requirements; the team decides acceptance or deferral. This is a process guide, not a checklist for diagnosing your own eligibility.

⁦2️⃣⁩ Identification, foreign nationals and residence abroad

Confirm which Red Crescent point accepts stem cell donor candidates, its hours and documents. Registration requires identity details including a Turkish identity number, address and lasting contact details. Do not assume a tourist passport or any foreign identity number automatically qualifies. Explain your document and residence category and obtain confirmation before visiting.

If you live outside Türkiye, ask the donor registry in your country of residence about registration there rather than relying on a short visit. Being contactable matters when a match may arise later. Do not supply an inaccurate address or legal status to bypass registration requirements.

⁦3️⃣⁩ Understand the stages

StageWhat it meansWhat to check
Registration and sampleInformation, consent, candidate testing and tissue typingYou are a candidate; donation is not completed
Potential matchTeam contact, further tests and renewed consentContact identity and the next step
Preparation and collectionSpecialist assessment, method and scheduleAppointments, risks and support
Follow-upAftercare and updated informationContact route and health changes

Matching cannot be inferred from a shared blood group alone. Specialists assess tissue type, testing and suitability. Do not promise a patient that your registration will produce a match or a transplant date. Patient assessment and searching for a donor follow a separate transplant-centre pathway.

⁦4️⃣⁩ After the registration sample

Do not register again or provide another sample simply because nobody has called. No contact may mean that a match has not been identified; it does not itself establish a lost sample or rejection. Ask about checking and updating an existing record rather than creating a duplicate.

Update your phone, address and other required information when they change. If contacted about a match, verify through the centre's known contact route before sending sensitive documents, then answer the renewed assessment honestly. The general registry considers candidates for different patients; registration does not earmark a donation for someone featured in a campaign.

⁦5️⃣⁩ If a match is found

Request an explanation of confirmatory testing, collection options, preparation, risks, possible effects, recovery and follow-up. Collection can use peripheral blood or bone marrow. The centre considers the patient, donor, clinical suitability and donor preference. The phrase 'blood sample' does not describe every later stage of donation.

Ask about appointments, travel, work, an accompanying person and which costs the organisations arrange or you may face. Do not assume paid leave or a payment. Do not take or adjust preparation medicines yourself. Tell the coordinator promptly about illness, concerns or scheduling difficulties.

⁦6️⃣⁩ Consent and privacy

Donation is voluntary and you can withdraw, but late withdrawal after the patient's transplant preparation starts can expose the patient to serious danger. Understand the commitment early and discuss concerns without concealing them or waiting until collection day. Do not pressure yourself or another person to donate.

Donor and patient identity and contact are governed by registry safeguards. Do not arrange a meeting or exchange records with someone claiming to be the recipient, or pay a broker promising a match. Ask the registry coordinator about the official process for any post-donation communication.

⁦7️⃣⁩ Six practical steps

⁦1️⃣⁩ Establish whether you want unrelated volunteer registration; ask the transplant centre about the family-donor pathway if that is your purpose.

⁦2️⃣⁩ Confirm the centre, recruitment age, accepted identification and address requirements.

⁦3️⃣⁩ Read the explanation and consent and disclose conditions and medicines.

⁦4️⃣⁩ Complete the directed registration sample and testing and retain contact details.

⁦5️⃣⁩ Keep your information current; if matched, verify contact and discuss tests, method and timing.

⁦6️⃣⁩ Follow aftercare and promptly report health changes or decisions affecting the process.

⁦8️⃣⁩ Frequently asked questions

Does giving the registration sample complete stem cell donation?
No. It supports testing and tissue typing for a possible later match.

Is the same blood group enough?
No. Specialists determine tissue matching and medical suitability.

Do I register for a named patient?
The general registry serves different patients; registration is not earmarked for one named person.

Nobody has called. Should I repeat the sample?
Do not repeat it independently. Enquire about your record and keep contact details current.

Does everyone use the same collection method?
No. The centre discusses options, suitability and preparation.

Can every foreign visitor register?
Do not assume so. Confirm accepted identity, address and registration arrangements.

Can I withdraw?
Donation is voluntary, but late withdrawal can seriously harm the patient. Discuss the decision and inform the team promptly.
